One of the many common "puffball" or "earthball" varieties of fungus (not "mushroom") that often pop up in moist soil. And generally not edible. Indeed, some forms are deadly poisonous. Three sub-cats - stalked, true, and false. Only the ones with stalks are supposedly edible but with dirt-like undesirable flavor.

Just FYI, please don't come to this forum asking if a mushroom is poisonous. No one armed with just a few pictures will take responsibility for you eating something and keeling over. Even if they are poisonous they are no threat in your yard, unless you have a kid or a pet who likes putting strange things in their mouth.

Very true Dan. Any fungal growth that just "pops-up somewhere" (in a place that was NOT expressly spore-infused and cultivated for true mushroom production) should be treated as poisonous by the lay person. Even wild morel mushroom patches have most likely been cultivated by someone at some time.

I have Been told on other sites that it wasn’t posion and I still Know better than to eat it! I came here because this is where I feel like I know y’all (the ones that answer regularlily) and wanted yalls thoughts. But agree no one should go off someone word and eat anything that is possible posion. Thank you everyone for your answers. As some of you might remember I just moved to this property (my moms place) and never seen these anywhere else.

Sorry to disagree gardengal but the term "mushroom" is a colloquial term normally used to denote edible forms of fungus that grow on a stalk, have gills, and a cap of some form.

Oxford English Dictionary - "Definition of mushroom - a fungal
growth that typically takes the form of a domed cap on a stalk, with
gills on the underside of the cap.

Many forms of fungus growth do not qualify as "mushrooms" and are potentially deadly. The only forms of Calvatia (puffballs) that are considered safe to consume are those which have a true stalk (the ones Etta posted do not) and are pure white inside when cut open.

I have no wish to argue with you but that is a pretty narrow definition of mushroom. Shelf or bracket fungi are considered mushrooms and have no stalks; ditto with truffles. And there are far more species of inedible or even toxic mushrooms than there are ones that are considered edible.

Most horticulturists and mycologists use the term mushroom to refer to the visible reproductive parts (the fruiting bodies) of anything that is included in the Basidiomycota regardless of whether it has a stalk or gills.

There is a mushroom in our area that is almost identical to one in I think Asia???? That is called Death Cap. Several people have died or had to have liver transplants cause they were picking mushrooms that looked just like the ones they picked at home! This includes a mushroom "expert"!

Unless you know your mushrooms, go to the store or the farmers market!

That looks like a giant puffball, which is edible, if picked young. As it matures it stops being edible. On second thought it might be the common earthball, Scleroderma citrinum, which is poisonous, and not closely related to the true puffballs.

BUT DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT. CONSULT A MUSHROOM EXPERT IN YOUR AREA.

You never eat a wild mushroom unless you know exactly what it is and are certain it is edible. No internet picture or general forum can inform you! There are plenty that are poisonous and many of them resemble others and are easy to mistake. There is no antidote for some of the damage that some poisonous types make even if one survives.
