What color should the stair treads be?

I just removed the carpet off the stairs to my high-ranch :)

What color should the treads be? The bottom picture shows the tread against the coloring of the floor throughout the house. The metal railing is a dark brown color. My furniture is all dark brown as well. Should the treads match the color of the railing or the flooring? The risers will be white. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance!!

Tara, I am not a flooring person either but was given the same info by my flooring guy. I just put down a QS oak floor which included three stairs. I think the original treads were pine. My floor guy said not to mess with it that he would stain it to match floor. Well I'm not too crazy about how it turned out. My trim Carpenter said he could cover it with oak but the floor guy said it should have been done before floor was laid. I wish now I would have just replaced them.

Stair runner on prefinished laminate stair treads?

Best solution would be to remove the laminate nosings and replace with a hardwood nosing, and install the carpet runner inset. That would save costs on the nosings- as they are typically 6' long, if you are only installing 6-8" on either side of the carpet runner you could potentially do 4-6 stairs with one piece.

Before you go cap treading its better to first understand Run and rise along with FFT. Finished floor thickness at landing and adjoining levels along with maximum nosing compliance.. Theres a lot of handymen that will gladly put you right out of code compliance while taking your money and installing topical cap treads. Your local municipality should have clear staircase compliance on their website or in office.

I like strong design usually, but man, that last pic? What do those people do, hop out of bed in the morning, run down the stairs, blow a whistle and yell "Offensive pass interference, the ball will be placed at the spot of the foul. Automatic, first down!"

Stripping the current finish, sand, and coat with new clear finish I think will do it.

My vote would be to match the floor. You asked about matching but without a picture of the existing floor, there's no way to advise.
