I've never tripped on my rugs. I have small ones on each side of the bed, and a 5x8 between the dresser and foot of the bed. I deliberately bought thin rugs because it's hard to trip on them in the bedroom at night. Plus putting heavy books on the corners until they lay flat.

Yes and no. I have one large rug under the bed, and it extends out 2-3 feet on each side and at the foot of the bed. It’s a flat, woven-type rug (I think it’s wool). I think I must be pretty careful when I get up at night, because I’ve never tripped coming back to bed. It sometimes gets me when I’m getting ready in the morning if I’m moving too fast and not paying attention.

I have two, one large remnant of vintage carpet for an area rug in front of the bed and a vintage runner along side the bed. Neither have pads underneath. The runner by the bed side will bunch up sometimes so I have to watch. Funny how one can trip over a small bump of carpet but I've come near to doing so.

I have never had an issue with tripping over the carpet.

We have one at the foot of the bed, mostly because I wanted a little added color there. I wish we had hardwoods instead of carpet, and if we did I would have a much larger rug beneath the bed (more of a large room-size), but I still like this one amd have not tripped over it yet.

I have a 3x4 foot needlepoint rug by my side of the bed. No pad underneath. I've never tripped over it in the 20 or more years I've had it there.

Mine is like jakabedy’s. We have a king sized bed, with an 8 by 10 rug under the bed. It extends far enough on the sides and bottom that i don’t have to hit the cold hardwood on my early am trek to the bathroom. I had a very neutral flatweave cut and bound at a rug store, since the bed is too heavy to move to change if the decor changes.

I have had various rugs of various sizes on various surfaces and not had an issue. Do you trip over rugs that you have elsewhere? As long as the edge is not curled up and the right padding is used you should be ok.

I think, as with LR sofas, you just need to follow an all-on or all-off approach (the bed legs).

I have smaller orientals on each side of bed and a larger one at the foot, on hardwood. They all have the non skid pads underneath. and slipping/tripping hasn't been an issue.

Just curious: Isn't it difficult to keep the ones under the bed vacuumed? My bed is too heavy to move easily.

Seagrass Hahah........but......I can also trip at odd times. Joannie if you think you are one of THESE people, why not just get a wall to wall in your bedroom?

Personally, I don't like wall to wall, love the look of area rugs. But that said, we only have a wall to wall in our finished basement and an area rug in the dining room. Every where else is bare floors. And, I go around barefoot all trough the year.

We had wood floors in our guest bedroom but we ended up sleeping in there a lot because it had a tv and also if someone was sick. So anyway, on the wood floors we had three area rugs, one on each side of the bed and one at the foot. They were woven, something like sisal, with black fabric binding. Never tripped on them or even came close. They had some kind of non-slip-ish backing, which unfortunately wore out. I loved those rugs. I wouldn't bother with a rug under the bed, just gathers dust and hard to clean.

I have them and no problems with tripping. I avoid rugs that are small and flimsy that could get bunched up. I think that could pose a greater risk. I also never get up at night in pitch black because we have bathroom night lights.

I have a patterned under my chair and ottoman and I have a sheepskin on the side of my bed...but they're both atop wall to wall so I don't trip on them.

I think size is key. We were in one place in NM where she had a small woven rug next to the bed on the hardwood floor and I slipped on that thing several times...and one in the bath in front of the sink on the tile floor that was thick that I tripped on a couple of times so those got moved immediately lest we injured ourselves.

We have one that goes under our bed and extends our far enough that we step on rug, rather than the HW floor. Like a PP, ours is a neutral, sisal-look wool so it never clashes with any decor. I just shove the vacuum under there, lol...it’s nimble enough to suck up the dust. Honestly, if it wasn’t for the acoustics, I’d have no rug in there...my HWs are beautiful, and I always wear socks in the house anyway, lol.

I have a couple area rugs in my bedroom. I've yet to trip on them, but I can see if you can't get them to lay flat they could become an issue. I did put a couple heavy boxes of books on one unruly corner for about a week to waylay that issue. and that worked.

I would love to have an area rug that goes part way under my bed, but I have a sleigh bed and can barely get a swiffer under it to clean the dust. It seems that ALL the dust seems to slither under the bed; I can’t imagine sleeping there with carpet or a rug that colllects dust that I can’t clean.

i do have a small rug at the end of the bed..just for looks.
