Need Advice on Bedroom Area Rug & Window Coverings
HI there - I really need some guidance. I'm stuck...
When we moved into our house my son was 2 and his room was already painted a slate blue color so we just freshened up the trim (BM Simply White semi-gloss) and moved on. My son is now 8.5 and would like his room to be made more to his taste.
At the paint store he picked out a bright blue color (BM Bayberry Blue) for the walls:
He asked for stripes. So we compromised and agreed to do one long accent wall in wide horizontal stripes (our wall has a window in the middle). He picked out a BM cream color for the stripes. So that one wall will look something like this:
He also asked for red in the room. So I suggested that we add red in some accent pieces, artwork, etc.
We picked out a new coverlet for his bed that has a bright blue in it and also some red. It also reverses to solid red. This one:
But now I'm stuck. I need a rug for the room and to decide what to do with the two windows (which just have plain white honeycomb blackout shades on them).
For the rug, I've thought about navy or red....solid, or a narrow stripe or a small geometric pattern. I'm not great at mixing patterns on my own, but am open to it.
For the windows - do I just leave them plain or add some kind of valance or faux roman shade?
I'm just stuck on what will work with what we've already selected. What would you do for a rug and windows?

Comments (16)Thanks @loobab! That bedding has turned out to be perfect in every way. It has become the inspiration for the whole house color palette. As often happens with decorating projects, I now have a new problem to solve. I have no place to put all those decorative pillows at night. There’s no other furniture in the room besides the bed and nightstands. Adding a bench at the foot of the bed seems silly with all that space on the sides to work with. A chair would be nice, but what else to put with it? I don’t need or want a dresser. And we don’t watch tv in that room, so a media console isn’t relevant. Comments (5)There's no other way to arrange the furniture? If you post a floor plan (hand drawn is ok) showing measurements of furniture, walls, window width and doors, maybe there is another solution. But if you don't want to do that, I'd just get some nice looking shades of your choice (bamboo or roman) and not worry at all about covering them with draperies. Depending on the size of your window, you might have to outside mount (better for light control, I think), because to inside mount might require a custom size....See MoreOwner’s bedroom rug size- need help/advice!
Comments (6)If you go to a big carpet/flooring store they will have remnants that you can have cut to a size that is exactly what you want. Or they can do this with any of the carpet they sell. They bind the edges and it looks like any area rug. I personally would get it cut to go from the outside edges of your side tables (which looks like it is in between the two sizes you have illustrated). The other dimension should leave a path from the door across the room and start just a couple inches from the front legs of the side tables (this is only slightly different than what you've shown). It really might be better to get the furniture in place before you order something so you can be 100% sure of the measurements as you will not be able to return a custom product....See Moreeclectic bedroom needs help with window covers
Comments (3)Hi - beautiful room and love the rug and bed! I can't necessarily recommend a particular fabric for the curtains but I can tell you that I did a window treatment that extended almost two feet on each side of the window and full to floor (not dragged on floor), hung closer to the ceiling. It gave the room an incredibly sophisticated look. My wall looks like it's all window! I put shears under it and leave the shears closed during the day but pull the curtains back on each side. Also, I would recommended a white or ivory bedspread and fold your quilt at the foot of the bed. This way, the headboard isn't "fighting" with the coral colored quilt. One more thing - I have a black curtain rod so the room has "a touch of black," which is nice....See More

3 years agoHi everyone. I just wanted to circle back to say THANK YOU for all your helpful ideas!
Here's a picture of the completed (for now) room.... I did stripes just on the one long wall that you see straight ahead when you walk in.
The only thing I'm thinking about is different window coverings. I don't want to do drapery panels since it's a kids room (and they will end up pulled down) I'm thinking maybe a woven wood shade might be nice to add to draw the eye up. The windows look unfinished to me.

3 years agoGREAT !! but for the windows I agree. Those are room darkening? You have shallow window casing,not much depth. A room WOVEN wood roman shade, CORDLESS. With a darkening liner, on an outside mount. I would do a white : )
