Was planting lavender as a perrenial a huge mistake?
Comments (18)One of the side effects of global warming are the increasing size and intensity of storm systems, both continental cyclones and hurricanes on the water. The fact that they increasingly feed each other is part of the reason we had so much snow this winter. That certainly was the case this past winter across the continental US. Quite a bit of our foul winter weather this year came across from the Pacific rather than all of it coming down from the Prairie Provinces out of the Arctic. Those make specific forecasts difficult to make very far into the future this far north. We are warmer over winter than we used to be - no question that some things now usually winter over that didn't only a few years ago, but there are still some sudden dips and anomalies just like there always has been in the North country. Coldest winter temp AVERAGE is quite a bit warmer than it used to be and that is what determines USDA hardiness zones. Also note that nurseries (such as Starks) have moved their hardiness zones for such trees as many of their standard apples in many cases one full zone north. Starks are not alone in this either. See the National Arbor Day Foundation for similar adjustments. Nearly every northern nursery now rates standard Red Delicious as zone 4, same for standard Golden Delicious, both of which were universally zone 5 only a few years back. IOW the official USDA hardiness zone charts are not being treated as gospel any more by quite a few professional nurseries....See MoreIntroducing New Cat (Help!!)
Comments (6)Hi Renee, You're a kind person, and KC is one lucky cat! About her snarling and growling at your cats - KC is a newcomer in your house right now, and as time passes by and she gets to know your cats better, she'll befriend them. For now, like you did before, let them see each other thru a crack in the door, or if possible, keep them separated by a glass door or a pet gate or something; this way they can see and smell each other, but can't really get near to cause injury. Everyday, let your other cats into the room where KC is kept, while she explores the other areas of the house; this will ensure that KC doesn't come to regard her current room as 'her' territory, and your other cats will get familiar with her smell. When the hissing and growling fits have stopped/reduced, and you decide to introduce her to the others, make sure you keep only one cat at a time in the same room as her, and watch them carefully. If there's hissing and growling, it's fine, but stop it before it escalates into scratching and a full-blown catfight (throw a pillow or something between them). We were lucky our three cats got along well with each other within a day or so, but it could take weeks or even months. If nothing works, you could try Felifriend, a cat pheromone spray (apply it on all the cats before letting them meet each other). You could get her spayed right away; in any case after the procedure, you'd have to keep her away from the others to recuperate (maybe 3-4 days), so why not do it now? Spaying might also reduce her aggression. I have a similar situation in my house right now, with Pumpkin (abandoned pregnant cat we took in) and her seven kittens in one room and our three cats. Our cats aren't allowed in Pumpkin's room because her kittens are less than two weeks old. Pumpkin hissed and growled at our cats when we brought her home (she was preggy then), but within a day, she got used to Max, and now when we bring her out of her room, she ignores him :) I'm worried about Simba's reaction to her, though; he still hisses at her. She doesn't seem fazed by any of our cats now, and I'll be getting her spayed next month, after checking with the vet (Pumpkin needs to put on weight, and the seven kittens aren't making it easy!). I'm sure, with time and patience KC and your cats will be friends. Keep us updated on your progress. Pranjal...See MoreCapital Culinarian Huge Problems - HORRIBLE customer service!
Comments (84)I bought my 48" Capital Connoisseurian on October 14, 2014 from Trevor Lawson at Eurostoves. I liked it so much I have purchased another, a 36" for another kitchen redo. After researching many stoves I chose the Capital for the stovetop. The open burners have the best flame distribution and heat levels of any stove i can find. And the stove has performed quite well since until a few months ago the thermostat for the oven was not working. I called their service company and new thermostats were sent straight away. However a service person is not to be found. I went on the Capital Cooking website and searched the "Find a Dealer". I called dealers in New England, they were not really dealers, they don't have a stove in their showrooms. If they don't sell them, they don't service them. So I called dealers on the west coast to see if they were ghost dealers too. I only found one, a large design center that stated they carry the Capital stove line. I did find a local guy that said he could replace the thermostats for me which he did. They do not work properly. Yesterday was Thanksgiving, I had 24 guest relatives from around the country. I did a lot of math figuring out what to set the oven controls to in order to get the actual desired temp inside the ovens. There were a lot of adjustments throughout the 5 hour cooking time. I was really lucky, because the fire behind the back panel didn't start until after the turkey was done. Now I have a $10,000 stove with no service person to call. And another I hope does not break anytime soon. What a dilemma. I see that most recent chatter is 2 years old. So have the service issues been solved, or have folks just given up, purchased other stoves, and moved on? I like to get this one fixed. Located in CT. Has there been any success finding a service person?...See MoreHuge mistake!
