Cultured Marble vs onyx collection vs solid surface shower pan
Comments (78)Lenore, who is installing the granite slab shower? Start there and make your priority be hiring a VERY experienced tile professional - one you have vetted carefully to insure that their qualifications meet your design requirements and product selections. Stone slab installations are not for the B team, and especially in a wet area. Can it be done? Yes, depending upon the structure over which a solid surface stone is installed and the methods used. We install solid surface shower walls regularly, but from an empty cavity which we build to meet all specific design and installation specifications, including the pan. A solid stone slab cannot be supported by the pan (it is not meant to support a slab wall). A slab wall is pinned and tied so it is self supported, not supported by a pan. This is a very complex installation. A LOT to consider. As one example, the thickness of your slab? 2cm. 3cm? (effects the weight load on the space). And I could go on. After you have carefully vetted the qualified tile contractor, have this conversation with them. If you question or want to clarify their recommendations, check back or seek professional advice from other qualified sources. Please consult with a professional onsite. Good luck with your project....See MoreMarble vs. granite for a master bathroom
Comments (6)Marble, if sealed properly, will not stain. It will etch though, regardless of sealing. Anything acidic will etch. Honed marble shows etching less than polished because of the difference in surface reflectivity with honed. You do have to be careful about the types of cleaning products you use, but that seems like a minor issue to me. I like granite. There are a couple that I really love even. But I cannot picture them in my bathroom or even in my kitchen for that matter. My kitchen will be Carrara, and I'm considering a few different marbles and limestones for my new master bath. I should have pricing on the ones I like back from my fabricator on Monday to help make my decision. If you know going into marble that there will be some etching and some changes in cleaning products AND you can't find a granite that makes your heart sing, then go for the marble you love. Don't look back....See MoreCultured vs. real marble
Comments (10)We built our house 19 years ago, and had cultured marble vanity tops and sinks installed in all the bathrooms. The type we have does not at all look like plastic, it looks just like marble. We have a marble topped coffee table that is a perfect match to those bathroom counters. Problem is, our counter tops and basins have to be treated just like the real thing, too. They scratch very, very easily, stain if makeup or colored liquid is dropped on them, and I cannot use any kind of abrasive cleansers on them without it scratching or dulling the finish. The counter top in our foyer bath has a marbled black finish, and shows every dry water spot and speck of dust imaginable. It may be that the cultured marble products now have more of a plastic look finish, I don't know. I haven't been looking at them. My SIL just installed real marble counter tops in her new kitchen, and it looks just like what I have in my baths, but it, too, has to be treated carefully and is very prone to scratching. If today's cultured marble product looks like plastic, and you are wanting the look of marble, then I'd advise to go with the real thing and seal it well. While you might safe some $$ with cultured, the maintenance and upkeep is just the same, so why not have the elegance of the real thing?...See MoreHonest thoughts on cultured marble in a master bath reno??
Comments (22)Wow! Thank you all for responding. You gave me a lot to think about :) awm03- your vanity is beautiful!!! I love that! beverly- is that your bathroom? Gorgeous!! I also am not fond of the ogee edge, gsciencechick. Yours looks great! lol- I still don't know what to do! Looks like I need to price it all out. Another reason I like integrated sinks is bc honestly, that's one less thing to buy, or 2 in my case bc we have a duel vanity. So not only is sold surface more $$$$ but I would need to add on an extra ~$400 for undermount sinks....See MoreRochal C
