Comments (33)They are forecasting 38, 40, and 42 degree lows for tonight and the next two nights. That's too close for comfort. While we haven't put the tomato plants in as yet, I did plant my annuals in my large containers this past week. We covered all the containers, moved the plants that have not yet been planted into the garage, and covered the hydrangea. It has taken a beating already this year. We had light frost a couple of times, once when it was not covered. Then, exactly 2 weeks ago, a storm went through with some golf ball size hail, which beat up the leaves. You should see the holes in my Blue Angel and Plantaginea Hostas! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the weather person is wrong this time. Comments (32)Just to let you know, my "Over The Moon" that started as a bareroot in the Spring is now abut 4 1/2' tall and is blooming like crazy and they are beautifully made and of good size. The form on most is impeccable and I think could make a fine exhibition rose. Mine is definitely lightly fragrant. The bush itself has stayed very clean of BS or PM and there didn't seem to be any insect problem either. I will see how winter hardy it is this winter because I don't winter protect except to let oak and maple leaves that fall are allowed to cover the rose beds and then be blown out in the Spring. Comments (12)^^ Those are great plants for sure. I forgot to mention the botanical name for the elephant ear in my pic. Its Colocasia esculenta 'Fontanesii' and also blooms very well (I got 10 blooms from it, I never had so many blooms from an elephant ear before). And it reproduces often and the babies are really easy to pot up as new plants. Unfortunately most of the babies from this large one had aphids on it and died, but I do have 2 left 1 of which is very healthy. And you can store both caldiums and elephant ears really easily for the winter. I made mine brown from a frost, then I cut it down and dragged it in where it got no water. It still grew a little, but nothing much. Now its out for the summer and growing really well. There are lots of other nice plants that go well for calidums and a good rule of the thumb is... if the leaves of the plant is purple, or the plant has a dark colored appearance and the plant doesnt get too big, its probably a great companion plant for caldiums. Good luck!...See MoreOutstanding leaf colour or design?
Comments (30)Witchazel, I know it is supposed to be hardy to 5a, but oakleafs aren't necessarily flower bud hardy here. In the nearest city to me (Concord, NH, solidly 5a) I've seen several that look fairly sad after one of our winters and they take some time to recover. I'm usually about 5 degrees cooler, so I haven't even tried. That's why I thought T2D might add her experience on these. My memory is that they didn't survive for her, but my memory sometimes fails me. ;>)...See Morepopmama (Colorado, USDA z5)
