STTP vs Sodium Carbonate

GW Laundry Soap Additive Noob here.

With that recent thread on towel, I have to ask the basic question.

When and where do you use STTP vs Sodium PerCarb.

Darks vs. Whites, concerns about color fade with either ?

I bought a Big Bag of perCarb from the Chemistry Store and I use it primarily to just run sanitize clean cycles on my machine. Occasionally I'll do a citric wash. The same citric acid I will use to clean out my espresso machine water tank

I was reading a laundry manual not long ago. Said sodium percarbonate will work at 120F depending on amount of time in solution...but works much faster at 140F and above.

At 120 it just takes longer which in todays washers with long wash cycles should give fine results.

140F will require less time.

Also I didn't think Oxiclean had a activator??

If a detergent that already has Oxygen Bleach such as Tide with Bleach powder is being used no additional sodium percarbonate is needed.

The regulars here already know the benefits of hot water expecially for whites, bedding, towels in which case a bleach activator isn't needed...but for folks that may be new and are affraid of hot water its best to stick to a powder detergent with oxygen bleach and a bleach activator.

Are you asking about Sodium carbonate or sodium percarbonate?

Stpp is a complex phosphate.

Sodium percarbonate is oxygen bleach.

Stpp you could safely add to all loads. Sodium percarbonate I'd only use on whites or very lights.

I add stpp and sodium percarbonate to white loads with extra hot water. Lovely whites.

As per your specific question.

Sodium percarbonate will fade darks and colors. Its oxygen bleach.

Stpp shouldn't fade anything.

STPP is an entirely different thing from sodium percarbonate.

STPP (sodium tripolyphosphate) is a complex phosphate which combats hard water (binds to and sequesters the mineral content) and "energizes" the wash water.

You may also run across reference to TSP (trisodium phosphate), which is similar to STPP but can be a bit harsh on fabrics and generates a precipitate when binding with mineral content (whereas STPP is non-precipitating). TSP is often used as a general-purpose cleaner for washing driveways or as a surface-prep cleaner before painting.

Sodium percarbonate is oxygen bleach, same as in OxiClean and detergents that contain "all-fabric" bleach.

Hi Dave The windrow varies in height due to the way it was dumped. In some spots it's 5 feet high, down to 3 or so between dump areas. I was thinking of spreading it out to also level it out and make it easier to work with or on. I'm not sure I will be planting anything on it anyways as available time is an issue for me. I will also have to see how much material I get this year as I am sheet composting my largest field and will probably need all I can get for that project. If it turns out I get sufficient materials I can always throw some on top of the wood. But for now, the priority is the field. Lloyd

Most double-acting baking powders contain both cream of tartar and an aluminum salt (along with the sodium bicarbonate). The former works at room temperature. The latter only at oven temperature. Rumford baking powder substitutes monocalcium phosphate for both the cream of tartar and the aluminum salt. It works just like regular double-acting baking powder at room temperature but it rises less in the oven. It's sort of halfway between single-acting and double-acting in that respect. Charlie's Soap is wonderful! As time goes on, and as we use various different products, I think it's easy to lose sight of what it feels like to have truly clean clothing against your skin. I hesitated to try Charlie's Soap initially because it lacked enzymes, but I don't know how that translates into real results. I must say that my clothing feels much better against my skin, I haven't had a single bout of itching, and I'm amazed at how long my kitchen towels last between washings. My towels would smell bad pretty quickly before, but after washing them in Charlie's I find that they are more absorbent and resist smelling "foul" for a longer period of time. For those who want enzymes, Shaklee makes a product called Nature Bright Laundry Booster and Stain Remover. It contains oxygen bleach and enzymes. I haven't used it, perhaps someone else has? Does anyone know if it works, and if it rinses as cleanly as the CS? At this point, I think I'm a CS convert. It took a couple of washes to completely eliminate the tomato stains on my partner's shirt (he had a pasta explosion in the kitchen haha), but I think that's a small price to pay for a totally natural product that makes my clothes and skin happy. Had I pre-treated the tomato stain, it probably would have disappeared in the first wash, but I'm lazy. Jerrod, I hope your CS experience is as good as mine. Let us know!

I purchased 2 Kinetico K5s along with Kinetico water softeners at 2 different homes, spending over $10,000 on Kinetico products over the last 10 + years. I am supposed to get a 10 parts warranty from Kinetico since I purchased the K5 and the water softener. The plastic K5 filter bracket, on the K5 installed July 2012, 5 years ago, broke recently and flooded my home. Kinetico is saying they have no responsibility whatsoever and will not even replace the defective K5, let alone pay for any water damages from the broken K5. Absolutely terrible customer support. Avoid Kinetico. Their warranty is not worth the email that contains it. I am filing complaints with Consumer Reports, my state Attorney General office, etc, but the best I can do is share my poor Kinetico experience and hopefully save someone else this heartache. I just bought a Multipure Aquasana under sink carbon block filter and it works great. Customer service with Multipure is excellent so far. Multipure is NSF certified to remove a multitude of harmful chemicals. Kinetico is not NSF certified for anything. A whole house water softener is rarely needed anyway, and many home professionals consider a water softener a waste of money. By the way, the Kinetico water softener also leaks and never worked well. Kinetico is telling me that I am on my own, however Kinetico also forces you to only buy their brand filters through the local dealer. If that local dealer is incompetent, you are out of luck. Avoid Kinetico at all costs and save yourself the headache and money.

Good question, and thanks for the replies, as I'm perpetually confused by these things. If sodium percarbonate is oxygen bleach, is there an advantage to buying it separately rather than just using OxiClean or all-fabric bleach?

Sodium Percar is cheaper by the bulk volume and is just that versus the concentration you get with Oxi

Oxiclean has more filler than oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) and I think costs more than just buying the more pure form of sodium percarbonate.

Straight up sodium percarbonate needs an activator or hot water at 140f; am I right? This is what I remember from past discussions. The top shelf detergents have the activator in the detergents iirc.

Help with this clarification please.

I think sodium percarbonate needs at least 120F to start working but works better at higher temperatures. If a detergent contains it, the detergent most likely has the activator in it which allows sodium percarbonate to activate at think around 90F. We will need further clarification because I might not be correct!
