RRD - witches broom? Knockout roses
Comments (18)Summersrhythm; Thanx for your input- I use Bayer's systemic rose & flower granules, but haven't been very regular with it. Michaelg; as for the leaves, a few had black spot but not as bad as I've seen in previous years. A different rose bush looks like it was fried, but the leaves are still hanging on. As mentioned above I use a systemic because I feel it is a more direct application & I don't have to wait for a calm day (few & far apart here where I live) to spray. Do you think I should cut the canes down now? We are in the midst of some pretty hot & humid weather with daily afternoon t-storms, I'm not sure if that would help or shock them. Most of my roses are floribundas or teas & have been growing several years....See MoreWitches brooms and canoe trip
Comments (3)Hi Coralbelle, Here is a bit of advice about witches brooms. First don't collect them in summer. We won't get into all the technical aspects but the broom harvest doesn't start around here until usually December. I actually just finished grafting a new broom yesterday. I received a call from a lady a couple days ago about witches broom growing on Cham. obtusa Gracilis that I have to pick up on Monday. This is the tail end of the conifer grafting season. The only specimens I would collect this summer are photos of them. It's tough to tell how the brooms turn out but they generally do replicate the mutation in the tree. I just graft them and use a wait and see attitude. Propagating them or other cultivars is technically easy enough but the after care has about 50 variables. A friend of mine had 1200 live out of 7000 Blue spruce grafts this year. His worst take in over 25 years and he can't figure out exactly what went wrong. A bitter dissapointment and huge financial loss as these plants were all sold. The opposite was nearly true last year with me. This year touch wood, I should be around the 90% or more mark this year depending on the species of tree. Certain species are more difficult than others and certain cultivars within that species are more difficult than others. If you do stop this summer (if that happens), I can show you exactly how it's done. As for the greenhouse in Inuvik, just some trivia I picked up from somewhere. I wouldn't want to pay that heating bill. How long did you live in Inuvik? Darren...See MoreUnder-stock and witches broom questions?
Comments (15)Nice founds, Jeff! I also found two Picea abies brooms and Pinus sylvestris - lot of brooms. For me it also will be the first experience of grafting.... But I look forward to spring. I hope that the outcome will be successful. Good luck to you. Ireena...See MoreWitch's Broom on Witch's Broom?
Comments (22)Thanks Steve. I always wondered about that. I do have a broom from 'Mops' called Pinus mugo 'Dave's Choice'. It was found by Dave Horst at the Bickelhaupt Arboretum in Iowa. The original broom has now died. This spring I noticed that I have a broom on my 'Dave's Choice'. It's pretty small but I may be able to try to graft it this winter. So basically that is a broom on a broom. I have seen others in the past so I do know that they happen. Bill...See MoreJacob Bisharat VA zone 7A/7B
