RRD - witches broom? Knockout roses

Can any identify if this is RRD? About 25% of the bush has this in it. We are located in NC if that matters. None of my other roses are showing signs but they are spaced pretty far part and this is my only knockout.

Mori and Kate, RRD has been in the Kansas City area for over thirty years. The paper in my web book Bibliography by Dr. Fred Crowe is, I think, available somewhere on line. He did a very good into as the disease was new to him and almost everyone else back then. Crowe, F.J., 1982, A recent Outbreak of WitchesÃ¢ÂÂ Broom of Rose in Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri, Phytopathology 72(7): 976-977. (Abst.) Crowe, F.J., 1983, WitchesÃ¢ÂÂ Broom of Rose: A New Outbreak in Several Central States, Plant Disease, 67(5):544-546 The picture Issa posted has the perfect shot of normal KO blooms after the petals have dropped : look at the five sepals on the two blooms on the right (one in the uppermost right corner.) Now look in where the blooms aren't dropping their petals neatly. Just above where the two black pots are touching each other there are sepals that are symptomatic of RRD on KO. Their sepals aren't like the ones at right, but have a (for lack of a better adjective) leafy edges, lots of stuff instead of the smoother edges you see at right. I've seen a lot more 'leafy sepals' appearing on roses that we saw last fall with RRD; the sepals excessive and aberrant growth is really bad. After KOs have been sick for several years, the symptoms change gradually and the leaves thin and more witches brooms appear and the blooms come in almost cone-like densities. The colors of individual witches brooms go from magenta to chlorotic green depending on where on the rose they emerge. If the symptoms weren't so ugly, they'd be interesting.

With regard to my RRD rose from Home Depot that I trashed last week: it has to to with the recent TIME and the PLACE that rose came from. It might be more susceptible due to its multiflora parentage. I bought 3 Flower-Carpet roses 7 years ago from Home Depot, and those are fine. I also bought 2 Knock-Out roses 7 years ago from Lowe's and they are fine. I bought 2 Knock-out roses from Walmart 6 years ago, and they are fine. One Walmart Knock-out was at the same spot as the RRD rose for 5 years, until I moved it to partial shade last year, and put in the RRD bought from Home Depot. The distance from that RRD rose to the mailbox is about 70 feet, with dense shrubs and trees in between. I don't think that the mail truck is the cause. A friend recently bought 10 Knock-outs from Walmart, and they are fine. Walmart' rose supply is much smaller than Home Depot, and carries mostly Knock-outs.

A couple of comments, We have seen RRD on a large bed of Dr. Huey in the spring, and it's not red, but the green Round-up look alike, and by fall, it was no longer RU lookalike but much, much worse. In the background, it looks as if the nearby fenceline was sprayed with a herbicide with an automated sprayer that took out about 18" of grass, etc. It was so hot this summer that most herbicides' volatility was enhanced. And all of these problems seem to have come up midsummer onwards. I don't think I see any symptoms of the a problem that was there in spring, and then came in even worse recently. But I am not certain. What I do know is that I'd take the sick canes off and wait. They aren't going to get better looking in the next two years even if it's ONLY round up. The folks at the Vineyard might want to send samples to the plant disease lab at Virginia Tech (attention Mary Anne Hanson) and she could check for eriophyid mites which could be expected to have higher concentrations if it's RRD.

How soon to plant a new rose in the spot of a RRD infected rose?

Hello Lin Most of what I have read says to wait about 1-2 months before planting another rose in that spot. That info is corroborated by roserosette.org (which has USDA and other backing) here: https://roserosette.org/control/ I share your RRD woes and experience. I had a rose Mohana, that I didn’t care so much about, contract RRD. I pruned the infected cane down to the base. Not only did the RRD re-surface on Mohana, but it also infected one of my prized big climbers next to it, Lavender Crush. A hard lesson learned, but now whenever I see the 1st sight of RRD, I remove the entire plant. Many locals ask me about rose advice , RRD and otherwise, and I unfailing advise them to remove the entire plant ASAP. It’s advice that no one wants to hear and few will follow, unfortunately. I’ve not seen any RRD so far this season in my garden...fingers crossed.

Geesh--each pic got worse! By the third pic, I was ready to pronounce this rose a victim of RRD. Destroy it immediately before it can cause harm to any others (RRD mites getting borne on wind currents around your yard).

So sad!

The first two I wasn't sure. But the third definitely looks like RRD. And if it's over 25% of the bush, you have no choice but to dig it up and dispose of it.

The look of the rose buds is the give away for RRD on these bushes. Healthy Knockouts have simple hardly ornamented sepals. The sepals on these blooms are horrifically overgrown and aberrant.

I am anxious to hear if you completely got rid of it or experienced it in 2014. I had a twelve year old Noisette that was fabulous -- succumbed to this last year. Had to have it dug out and completely removed. So far, no sign this year. Fingers crossed!! I am about 15 miles east of Charlotte.

I'm so sorry about your rose. No matter what the rose its heart breaking to know that rrd has made it to your garden.

I know this is an old thread but I need to know what is going on. For the last two years my roses have looked more like Halloween decorations than living things- spring comes, they are beautiful; full of leaves & buds. Now, in June, poor flower production & even less leaves-just like last year- what gives? I have fed, watered, obsessed- nothing helps! Should I just yank 'em? What kind of disease am I fighting? I love roses, But this is pushing me over the edge! I'm in eastern NC(Little Washington) & would appreciate any advice I can get-

It looks normal to me, no RRD signs there. You just had/have saw flies ate your leaves. No big deal. :-) You can use safer insect killing soap to kill the saw flies ate your rose leaves, you can find it at Lowe's/HD for $6.00-7.00 a spray bottle. My friends at rose club use that for saw flies. I use stronger spray for my garden, I have other hardy bugs (rose midge) to kill this season, it also kills the saw flies. I use Bayer's Insects killer, but there is no need for you to use this strong spray if you only have saw flies to deal with. Good luck! :-)

Mouse,

You can remove the dead and dying canes at the base. What happened to the leaves on the part that is alive? Did they get black spots, turn yellow, and drop?

Summersrhythm; Thanx for your input- I use Bayer's systemic rose & flower granules, but haven't been very regular with it. Michaelg; as for the leaves, a few had black spot but not as bad as I've seen in previous years. A different rose bush looks like it was fried, but the leaves are still hanging on. As mentioned above I use a systemic because I feel it is a more direct application & I don't have to wait for a calm day (few & far apart here where I live) to spray. Do you think I should cut the canes down now? We are in the midst of some pretty hot & humid weather with daily afternoon t-storms, I'm not sure if that would help or shock them. Most of my roses are floribundas or teas & have been growing several years.
