Window treatment for sliding patio doors?

Our patio doors face north. We are now planning to get a patio cover over the sliding doors that would make our dining room even more darker. What curtains/blinds would you recommend here? I would like to keep them open during the day but have privacy at night. Also, I am looking for something that opens from the middle instead of the side like my vertical blinds right now. That way we have a view of the outside when we use the dining table.

I would install textured drapes that have grommets in them on a designer pole. This way, they are easy to open from whichever direction you prefer.

i'd resist the patio cover! your patio is very shallow, will you really use it when it rains, and it seems that sun protection would be minimal. an umbrella would give you sun protection and then you could close it up.

I did mini blinds split at the center of the doors so I could open the slider side and walk outside. Years ago I bought the 2 inch slats and I loved the look (very plantation looking) but they were very heavy to open. I wore out the cords and had to replace them. I now have 1 inch privacy blinds but I feel like the are not as "open" as the 2 inch. My view feels a little more restricted. I ordered them from American Blinds and wallpaper and they were the Hunter Douglas brand. I hope this helps.

I rarely close my sliding door drapes, love the light and we have almost no privacy issues. But I installed my rods almost 10" either side of the slider....slider is 6' rod extends to 8'. Then, my drapes were hung with rings so they would slide easily. My current drapes are shirred on the rod, so they take more effort to move and I wouldn't recommend that for those who want to cover the slider each day. I would definitely use curtains. They can be kept completely out of the way when using the door, they come in many fabrics and prices, and they can be washable. You could use grommet top panels on a decorative rod. They are very kid and pet friendly. In addition....I abhor roller shades...:)

@ninigret - It rains 6-8 months year in Oregon. It's been hard without a patio cover. We tried an umbrella for a while. Did not work.

ok, that makes sense about the rain... have you considered a retractable awning? i just really would hate for you to sentence yourself to more indoor gloom.
