Treatments for Sliding Patio Door

Help! Anyone have any suggestions for a treatment for a 5' sliding patio door. We have just finished our new kitchen and the only thing left is finding a treatment for the sliding door and a double window on the eat in side of the kitchen. We do not want to put up vertical blinds. We are looking for something more out of the way, possibly 2 roller shades on one headrail to maintain access to slider. We really need something in the summer to reduce the heat of the sun. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would suggest then getting reflective window film. They have two kinds, the more expensive one (of course) is a heat barrier. The other reflects glare and offers some slight privacy during the daytime. You can also get varying degrees of darkness with the film.

I was never a fan of slider doors and agree that going back with a swinging door is best. Two 36" doors would be my first choice. If swinging at either end won't work,one can be swung from center. Alternatly,you can install two fixed plus one swinging door. You can choose single pane glass with or without deviders in 1-2 or all three positions. Two 24" slabs fixed at each end plus one pre-hung 32" hinged at center position equal's 80" of door,leaving 16" for jambs and trim. The configurations are endless if you hire a good carpenter.

I agree with Fori, you are talking to the wrong sales people. For years early in my career, seems almost all I did was change out sliders to french doors. For your opening size and situation, you could use several combinations of door and sidelight combos. For example, a pair of 32" swinging french, with a 32" fixed sidelight. If your rough opening won't accept that, perhaps a 30" sidelight and/or 30" doors.

I would call in another Marvin Dealer as if you were starting from scratch. Have them come in for a consult and a second estimate. Ask the question and see what he/she says. Even if you’re happy with the first dealer, dealers can charge differently so at least you’ll have something to compare apples to apples with. I actually have two appointments scheduled for Sunrise windows next week, but I’m not actually sure which dealer I’ll end up with. I have to say though both my mother and my sister had the french doors installed. They weren’t Marvins but they were extremely happy with that style.

Check your sliding door warranty. For some manufacturers, window film voids the warranty.

I rarely close my sliding door drapes, love the light and we have almost no privacy issues. But I installed my rods almost 10" either side of the slider....slider is 6' rod extends to 8'. Then, my drapes were hung with rings so they would slide easily. My current drapes are shirred on the rod, so they take more effort to move and I wouldn't recommend that for those who want to cover the slider each day.

Outdoor shutters are nice and let the air flow through while blocking the hot sun. Mounted outside makes it easy to hose off to keep clean. Building shade outside the door and window is another option, so the air is cooler before entering your home. What is the outside space for the doors and window like?

We have Hunter Douglas Vertiglide cellular shades on our 9 foot slider in our kitchen. Works pretty well at keeping out the heat, and when folded it is very small, so you get the whole view.

I did full length sheers and drapery on a slider that pull to one side and when opened, stack so the entire slider is exposed. The rod is about 30" longer than the window itself. Its a modern house so this assymetrical arrangement works well

If you are looking eventually to replace the door, I would strongly suggest Pella Sliding French door with the mini-blinds or shades between the glass. I have that setup and never have to worry ever about trying to add window coverings to a moving door. There is seriously nothing like them on the market.
