Lithops are great from seed. Be careful of Ebay sellers. Many of them sell fake seeds. If they aren't pretty much like dust, they aren't Lithops. Hope it goes well.

Ditto. Been avoiding mesembs due a few discouraging failures ,but hopefully, now with more experience,a cooler head and a better soil making process, ill give lithops and all the other mesembs a go....

Well, I received the seed I ordered on eBay and they did, as you noted Jeff, seem pretty much like a lovely golden brown dust. Just to be sure what I was looking at, I placed the packet on a flat-bed scanner and scanned at 1200 DPI then opened up the scan in Photoshop. This allowed me to look closely at them and even count them. (I recommend this method to others, as it works easily and rapidly) They are obviously seeds of some sort. Sort of like short rice grains with a slight groove down the side with some small variations as to size and exact shape. Seller was very generous in his count also. What was sold as 50 seeds are more like 300 so I split them into 4 separate 4" square pots planted as normally recommended many places on web. If they are Lithops, I should know in a few days if they sprout as suggested by the same sites.

Here is a closeup of a couple of them. I'm beginning to think that they are not Lithops seeds, as I believe I saw somewhere on the web a photo showing them to look more like little grains of popcorn. These are actually a golden bronze color but were scanned in grayscale to minimize document size.

They don't look like dust. Also, I don't think they'd be generous enough to give you 300. Do know that many of us have fallen for this, and Ebay won't do anything about it.
