I guess I've just fallen into the trap of assuming absolutely everyone has a dining table, regardless of layout. Which is silly- not least because I never eat at a table anyway! Ha ha. I think you're right; it's better to use the space comfortably for something other than the intended purpose, than to squash a table in where it won't work. I just had one other thought, which is maybe putting some kind of buffet or sideboard on the window wall. It would provide storage for place mats, holiday dishware, etc, and then I could combat the lack of a dining table by laying out a buffet when friends come over. My only concern is that I think it would block the bottom part of the window. I can't decide if that would be worth it, just to gain the storage space, but maybe you could make it bearable with good choice of window treatments. Thoughts? Have you thought about turning your table to have the sort end using the bay for seating and the chairs on both long sides? This would give a more balanced look to the room and you would not have to swag your light (New light???). Then ditch the heavy thick green hutch in the corner and get a longer thinner buffet you can center on the wall with some art above it. Now that I see that cool nook.... what about going a different direction and get a simple white or wood credenza, but bring the amazing pop of color through wallpaper or tile above it. And make a bar area, or just a beautiful feature area. There are a million beautiful blue tiles that frequently get recommended on this site - often from Fireclay -- but of course I can't find any of those posts now! Thanks everyone, appreciate the input! @Patricia -- I know the chandelier isn't a perfect match, I stupidly fell in love with it before buying any of my other dining room furniture. BUT on the other hand wasn't drawn to any MCM-y fixtures prior to discovering this one. I think since we already have an eclectic vibe, it complements the rest of the decor fairly well. @Patricia & Ida -- ditto to the "no one wants to see themselves eating" comments. My sister said it to me yesterday.. Since we have a relatively small space, I thought a mirror would give the illusion of more space and brighten things up a little. And like Ida said: classic element, reflect the pretty chandelier, etc. I'm thinking I either need to borrow or buy a rectangular mirror just to see what it looks like. If it's terrible I know I need to go in the direction of artwork, maybe gallery wall? Wanted to avoid that because then I'd have to put together a cohesive grouping of artwork and photos. :\ I was considering a round, tinted mirror but am afraid I'll strike out again. This one is amber, also available in rose or grey tinted.. What about a starburst mirror? Sorry I'm stuck on mirrors, again, small / darkish dining area, trying to brighten it up and give the illusion of more space.
