Comments (15)I usually have on jeans when I am outside, and try to come in after a couple of hours and take a shower. I keep a spray bottle with about 1/8 cup bleach and the rest water, spray it from toes to chest and then shower. But if I spend all day or all morning outside, it's too late. I did sulphur the yard and have a sock with sulphur dust to hit against my ankles. The problem is, I never INTEND to go into chiggar areas, in fact I never intend to start doing anything in the yard in the morning. I go out to feed the fish or drink some tea on the deck, or I pull a weed here or there, or decide to check the vegetable garden, and the next thing I know, it's 10:30 and I've been out there all morning....See MoreInsect/possum bite marks or... oedema?
Comments (10)Very quickly. Oedema is a physiological disorder that can affect all plants. It occurs when the plant takes up more water than it can rid itself of via the process of transpiration. In afflicted plants, internal water pressure (turgidity) can become so high that some leaf cells rupture or cell contents leak into inter-cellular spaces in leaf tissue. It's most often driven by excessive water retention in the soil, but cool temperatures, high humidity levels, low light conditions, or partial defoliation can individually or collectively be additional contributors, as can anything else that slows transpiration. As well, nutritional deficiencies of Ca and Mg are known contributors to the malady. Symptoms vary by plant, but can include wet or weepy areas on the foliage, blisters that turn from white or tan to dark brown or black, then gradually turn corky/ scaly/ ridged, and wart-like or gall-like bumpy growth. Comments (14)Sevin, also called Carbaryl (1-napthyl methylcarbamate), will kill Japanese Beetles, and it probably will kill your Shroud Beetles as well. This is a contact killer and must be sprayed directly onto the beetles to kill them. There is difficulty with spraying Japanese Beetles. They congregate in large numbers devouring roses, elbow to elbow, writhing upon each other as they devour the flower. Yet they are not as oblivious to their environment. They seem to see you coming. You almost have to sneak up upon them and spray their group as fast as you can, because as soon as they see you coming, they sense/feel a disturbance about to occur, and they head for the hills, flying off, before you can spray them. Perhaps, your Shroud Beetles, since they congregate inside a not yet open bloom, their means of escape is blocked, as you spray them. I imagine you would have to saturate the flowers since the spray must land on the beetle itself. Any spray that hits the rose bloom's petals or foliage is unfortunately wasted, collateral waste.
