Is this how I prepare walls for paint after wallpaper removal?
Comments (5)I'm also getting quotes for having wallpaper removed and having the walls painted. The painter I met with today outlined this same process, but he said he uses Zinnser Cover-Stain rather than GARDZ. What is the difference between the two? Is one better than the other? In case it's relevant to answering these questions, my project is to have one wall of wallpaper removed in my bedroom, then have all four walls painted a cream color. The three walls that are currently painted are now a brighter yellow. The wall with the wallpaper was sized and properly prepared before it was wallpapered. Prior to this wallpaper, it had been painted. Thanks for any advice!...See MoreHow To Remove Painted Over Wall Paper Paste / Glue
Comments (1)I think you are misunderstanding the purpose of Gardz. It is not meant to 'fill' anything. In fact, it is a very loose bodied product...almost has the consistency of water. What the Gardz does is keep the paste from screwing up your latex topcoats. If you painted over paste, the paste will eventually cause the paint to crackle away. The Gardz will keep that paste locked down so it cannot affect your topcoats. In your case, the best solution is sanding followed by skimcoat where necessary. Steaming will do nothing because the paste is already painted over I would use an orbital sander and yes it will be dusty and messy but it's fast. You could hand sand but this method will take forever. You could also do no sanding and the skimcoat over the rough surface but I think buzzing it down with an orbital is your best route....See MoreUse textured wallpaper to cover old wallpaper I cant remove?
Comments (5)Karen: which technique are you doing? Textured wallpaper over old wallpaper? Or one of the others? Rereading my post (after getting some sleep) it reads more like I am asking about texturing with drywall compound (like imitating venetian plaster, or a tuscan stucco look). PLEASE come back and tell me how it went! I have seen the paper bag technique done on home improvement shows. ItÂs actually simpler. Dipping in poly would be very messy and sticky. You adhere the paper with latex glaze or acrylic matte medium. Then cover with the same clear liquid to seal it in before painting. My hesitation with doing that is if someday down the road you didnÂt want such a texture, you could NEVER get it off. The entire room would have to be skimcoated by someone with the skills to get it really flat and smooth. I donÂt think I want to go that route. At least with drywall compound texturing it could be sanded off smooth easily....See MoreHow can I remove adhesive stick on wallpaper panels from sheetrock?
Comments (6)Unfortunately, Contact adhesive remaining is still a problem. That is the problem I had with the wallcovering I mentioned in the above post. You shouldn't just paint over the residue. This is similar to the problem when you pull a mirror off the wall or glued on paneling, and find gobs of black mastic. The easiest way to get rid of it is to cut around the gob with a razor knife and then peel the drywall paper off. Seal the drywall paper with an oil or shellac based primer, and then patch it with drywall compound....See MoreBruce in Northern Virginia
