How can I remove adhesive stick on wallpaper panels from sheetrock?

Comments (15)I also would love to remove paper from plaster walls in several rooms - but I'm afraid to... Long-ago PO's previously paneled over 2 rooms, (suspicious, much?), the only one without that "bandaid" has very thick paper - applied with at least a 1" overlap. It'd been painted over - & sprayed with what I assume was ceiling texture gunk? I scraped/sanded the hard scratchy bumps off & repainted. Both walls & ceiling have this paper - was this something sold for this purpose - to hide/cover, (or egad, "retain"?) crumbling plaster? I know it's probably not that bad - only other projects are keeping me from it, not fear, lol. On a side note... That's one more reason why plaster is better than drywall! I HAD to get rid of ugly wallpaper in a downstairs bath - tried an area & it pulled right off.. Good, right? Wrong. The floppers had put in drywall & papered directly to it without priming at all. Pulled a layer of "sheet" off the "rock", leaving a rough exposed-paper layer. Why go to the trouble to drywall, then apply (textured vinyl) wallpaper directly to it, so that removing the paper would literally destroy the walls? " Gardz was formulated to seal torn drywall, Kilz will not even come close to the performance of Gardz, not even on the same planet, get real." I have tried both of them. "Formulated" is in the eye of the manufacturer and the advertising department. I could care less about what the sales garbage says. "Latex Kilz product are highly marketed, over rated primers. If you were a professional painter and did this for a living you would know this. " I actually prefer shellac to avoid adding ANY water to the damaged surface, guess you missed that. The only reason to put anything on damaged drywall before repairing the surface is to reduce the movement of water from joint compound into the damaged cardboard causing any further swelling. Setting compound does a lot better than premix. You can use only as much water as you need to get a mix for skimming. Failing to remove left over paste before finishing is just foolish, and is not the issue here. Any coating is not being used as a primer to improve adhesion of the paint, just to block some moisture. Just about any primer will work for this, and it is going to get buried under a layer of drywall mud when the area is skimmed. Anyone who knows how to reportage damaged drywall and skim coat would know this. The painters do NOT know (ever watched them try to fix plaster?). Comments (12)Lots of good counsel about getting the wallpaper off. I would suggest, though, that you remove some wallpaper from an inconspicuous spot to start so you can see what the plaster is like beneath. A good many older houses never received a finish plaster coat. What that means is you might find a rough, sandy plaster that would have to be skim coated before painting if you want a decent finish.This would greatly complicate what you want to do. Skim coating demands a great deal of care and skill so you would want to go slowly doing one room at a time or hire someone with the expertise to do it for you. If there is a hard, smooth finish coat of plaster, you're all set to paint once the walls have been washed to eliminate any residue of wallpaper paste, minor dings have been filled and a primer coat, if needed, has been applied....See More
