Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

Exterior Paint for 80's Contemporary Home

Hi Folks.

Repainting my house and looking for some inspiration, advise, and thoughts. The house is currently a dark purple with even darker trim. The front of the house doesn’t get a whole of light and there is a lot of garage face, the back of the house gets the sun. I’m thinking of lightening the color palette, I like Greys and no more than three color scheme.

Here are some of my thoughts below, supported by photo:

· Garage doors should be a different color than the main color of the house?

· I think the recessed window areas and entry are also additional areas that could be an accent color.

· Omit the trim paint color to get a more modern feel.

· Three color paint scheme at the most. Body, Accent, and maybe the front door.

Greys?

Look forward to any suggestions.

my thoughts:

the garage should be the same color as the rest of the body of the house. They are not an architectural feature to be highlighted.

I think trim in a different color is important if just a darker or lighter version of the body color.

The only accent should be the front door, to draw the eye to the entrance. After you remove the shrub blocking it from view.

If you're roof is brown, I'm not sure I'd go with grays.

Don't contrast the trim around the garage doors, let the walls, garage doors all be the same color.The house will look much larger..

Do make the guttering the same color as the surface behind it is.

If you search "What brand of Paint is Portrait Blue" this whole assorted page of links shows up in Pinterest mentioning Behr and SW... The house will look larger with a lighter color.

Grays and Blues are very close in color. WIth your brown roof, a shade of blue is the closest to gray that will match it. There are many shades of gray from confederate gray on up..Maybe this Portrait Blue would be more gray in the day light.

The house could use some lighter tones probably to make it look more inviting. I hope you find a paint color you like!! Keep us posted! :)

I love the 80's Shed roof style home! We are in the middle of our own 80's modern renovation! One of the first things we did was to replace the tired asphalt shingle roof with a fresh black metal roof, painted the exterior in Sherwin-Williams Urban Bronze with Black trim, Replaced the existing garage door with a Cloplay Frosted glass panel door, added a Sapele wood courtyard entry fence and replaced the entire front entry opening with a massive glass panel and an asian inspired 48' wide front door. We have made a positive impact on our neighbors... they are amazed at the transformation!

My neighbors have a house they painted charcoal. They have tried a number of different front door colors - pale yellow (definitely not a good choice), turquoise (not my taste, but it wasn’t a painful mismatch). My favorite was a dark red that leaned toward orange rather than blue on the color spectrum. It popped and picked up some of the colors in their brick chimney. Perhaps that would work for you. Currently, their door is a paler shade of the charcoal, which makes the house seem very monotone. I suppose the main lesson from them is that the front door isn’t a big area, so if you don’t like it, you can try again.

Ok folks! An UPDATE! and call for more advice! After much deliberation we decided against painting the brick. Too expensive and too much work. We sampled several different paint swatches (some suggested by you!) and opted for a dark gray with a hint of purple (I know, I know, the majority said no to gray, but we really liked it with the red brick. And we are pleased!). We just purchased modernist light fixtures in bronze https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AINJ3F2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and plan on replacing the double doors with simple, full light ones that should line up nicely with the adjacent plate glass windows. The effect will be similar to the wall of glass that is the back of the house--so you can see right through from front to back! One of the biggest changes, however, is the elimination of the stone pillars in front! We just demo'd them and the difference is amazing. So much more light and the car port roof seems less oppressive. However, we need to clad the steel posts with something. Any suggestions? I was considering something much narrower than previous and maybe painted to match the house color? Would love to hear everyone's thoughts!

Hi everyone! We recently purchased an 80s contemporary home that is in desperate need of some love and care. Looking for ideas and suggestions around color and design choices for the exterior siding, windows and deck, all of which will be replaced in the spring. The roof is new so will need to work with the current gray color. I’m having a hard time finding a way to incorporate (and love) the current, drab exterior stone on the fireplace and front facade. Perhaps a simple over grout method with a light color would brighten the current look - any other suggestions?
