Why would you want to change it? If I had a vast amount of money and it really bugged me, I'd replace (consolidate?) all the individual windows in the back with larger windows but mid-century was vastly unpopular for many years and this style will come back too. Personally, I'd spend my money on the interior.

This will be one of the few houses that I don't complain how undersized the front walk is!

Some things I would consider ...

• Notice how the foundation planting is comprised primarily of stripes of 3 different plants along its length ... an unappealing look, especially in rather narrow planting beds. Instead, some shrub placement along the wall and a single, solid groundcover is enough.
• The blank wall along the right side of garage is too empty. A very small tree could add some interest and temper the emptiness.
• trade in the looming sentries flanking the door for large masses of seasonal color.
• Retain the Jap. Maple at the end of the walk and encourage its growth. The empty wall behind it will look fine once the plant gets larger.
• At the back yard fill in with groundcover where it is absent. Find some places to add color.

I like the house as it is but the landscape needs adjusted.

I think I would like another color from the stone for the siding.

Ah geez, the views alone would sell this house for me. Sophie nailed it colorwise, and consolidating all those windows would make this place totally awesome.

we updated a similar home in northern VA a few years ago, changing the stone veneer to a more current style, and switching the siding to a mix of horizontal cedar and stucco. That, along with some accents and new landscaping, took the house from the 80s to a pretty contemporary style. It'll come down to finding the right designer in your area to help you.

Unfortunately, for me, the massive garage takes over the whole front of the house. I would talk to an architect to see what options could minimize the look of the garage.

i will agree with the very first commenter.... just as mid century modern has come back gangbusters, so will 80s contemporaries. (i've finally made peace with mine!) i'd use a light touch on yours, don't break it when its so close to its revival date.

Unless you have gobs of money burning a hole in your pocket, just enjoy the house as-is. The only thing you need is new patio furniture. Now, admittedly, I would paint all the white trim a screaming mustard yellow, but don't take that as "advice."

If you want to update the windows, contact a commercial glass company and find out the cost to replace some of those broken-up walls of windows with glass curtain walls. You might find it to be surprisingly affordable, and it would bring you closer to those gorgeous outside views.

The back is beautiful! I would change the roof peeks above the entryway and above the garage.

I'd love to see where you landed. We are going through the same questions ourselves!

I love the 80's Shed roof style home!

We are in the middle of our own 80's modern renovation! One of the first things we did was to replace the tired asphalt shingle roof with a fresh black metal roof, painted the exterior in Sherwin-Williams Urban Bronze with Black trim, Replaced the existing garage door with a Cloplay Frosted glass panel door, added a Sapele wood courtyard entry fence and replaced the entire front entry opening with a massive glass panel and an asian inspired 48' wide front door. We have made a positive impact on our neighbors... they are amazed at the transformation!

We updated ours (have since added a new black roof) from a Craftsman update someone did 20 years ago. Next is landscape.
