Air Duct System Cleaning Question
Comments (6)If it's new construction then it may be a good idea to have it done to get the sheetrock dust and other debris that may have fallen into the ductwork. Otherwise you'll live with it circulating or getting caught in air filters. That said, we built in 1996 and I didn't have it done till 2010 and we got along fine. It cost us $450 but they said they could not get a good suction because some of the vents opened up in the floor joists between the basement and main level, which others told me is sometimes done that way. We have about 1900 sq ft on main floor w/ full basement and no 2nd level....See MoreDoes air duct cleaning help with dust?
Comments (6)Excessive dust? dust doesn't come from the HVAC system, it's due to outside influences that cause the dust. Dust is in the air we breathe indoors or out, pet dander, smokers ash, skin dander etc. You remember the commercials Intel made many years ago where they showed the funny little different colored suits? The people in them covered from head to toe? Humans create dust. To eliminate dust entirely you have to go to extremes you can not imagine. The best way for homeowner's to cut down on dust is eliminate the house from being under a negative pressure. Realize I said "cut down" on dust. If the house is under positive air pressure 'most of the time' there is a pressure that is preventing infiltration, this will in turn cut down on the amount of dust. Cleaning your duct system is merely treating the symptom of a dirty home, it will just get dirty again....See MoreBest way to clean air ducts made with asbestos?
Comments (16)@sktn77a This is a very interesting idea. It seems like the main purpose of spray sealants is to seal the ducts from leakage, but as a bonus, the sealants may also help to encapsulate the asbestos inside the ducts. Sounds like the most effective solution outside of ripping out the old ductwork. Thank you for mentioning. @mike_home I'm not 100% sure whether the inside of my ducts are lined with asbestos, but I had an HVAC guy go into my attic years ago to take a look. He showed me photos of ducts that looked like long cardboard tubes and told me that's asbestos. I asked him the same question about whether it's maybe just the outside, but he seemed pretty sure that it was asbestos through and through (outside and inside). Would be great if asbestos was always just on the outside, but I did find this webpage that suggests sometimes it's not: https://buyersask.com/furnaces-acs-fireplaces/ducts/asbestos-ducting...See MoreHave you ever cleaned out your front hall coat closet?
Comments (30)This house originally had one one small closet, in what is now our all-purpose room: dining, office, food prep, etc. As a very small house, it does have an entry hall of sorts and I imagine when it was built there would have been a wardrobe, hatrack, or hall tree in there. Now though, it is sort of wasted space in a house that needs more useable space. A slice of the entry hall was taken to build a narrow stairwell to a new second story, and beneath the stairs the floor was cut to add stairs to the basement from inside the house. We added a coat rack to the basement door, so that's the closest we have to a front hall closet. We also have a very small secretary that used to serve as a phone table, but now holds items that are bound for somewhere else-- like the voltage tester to return to the neighbor, a book that needs to be carried upstairs, a package to take to the post office, reusable bags for the grocery. Oh, there are also bars of soap in the cubbies of the secretary. Two of my neighbors still have the original layout of the small entry room. Both of them use the rooms as tiny parlors, but to me, they give a feeling of being rushed. Have a quick seat but don't get comfortable; state your business; the door back out is right there by your shoulder; no need to come into the real living room; hurry up now. Neither has any kind of coat storage in the entry. The space is really odd in all our houses. I knew I had painted the one closet about 15 years ago. Just opened it to see that I had used the same white paint our wood trim has. Yeah, that closet is a mess....See More- 8 years ago
