Lil S, kids had been playing in the room and twisted the curtains. As for the curtain rod, that's where my husband said he could find the nearest stud to hold the nail. The other stud was over the window, so the rod would have been short of the corner :)

I guess I've never looked for studs. I just use a wall anchor and none have fallen out yet. LOL

The console is very pretty and I love the color but I would call its style sort of "shabby chic" and your choice of sectional is modern. From the picture I really don't think a sectional is the right choice for the space. Tape out the sectional on the floor so we can see how it will fit. Will there be a TV?

Thanks Lil S. I don't want the sofa to be the focal point hence the grey color. I would like the accent pillows, accent chairs to stand out; and a painting to coordinate with it. Just cannot think of the color that would not clash with the console table. Personally, my two favorite colors are peacock blue and pink. Is peacock a good choice? Is the grey sofa in the previous picture too dark? Should I try a lighter shade of grey for the sofa?

The half bath next to the living room is coral. Can dusty pink be another option for the living room accent? Does pink work for living rooms? The walls are neutral tan except one wall that is dark brown for accent.

Also I have brown leather couch in the family room so I want a grey sectional in the living room. Here is a picture of my family room that we just finished.

Thanks jck910. The sectional goes under the three windows and along the back wall. The corner window by the stairs will remain an empty space (possibly a plant) in case we decide to do our backyard and turn the window into an extra door to the side yard. The space under the stairs is where I thought the chairs could be. Ottoman in the middle. There is a dark brown bookshelf visible in the picture of the console table. That will go away. That wall may be used to hang a tv if need be. Let me get another picture to make it clearer.

It will always be difficult to keep a huge sectional from being the focal point. What do you think your focal point will be? The table is certainly not big enough to be a focal, but it does need more wall surrounding it. Try it on the stairwell wall. Maybe just the mirror alone, centered 5' above the floor, would be sufficient where you have the table now. That will pull the green color into both spaces. I suggest a reversible chaise sofa. Here are a couple that have a traditional feeling and they both come in other colors.

Here are some more pics. The wall with only 1 window adjacent to the stairs is 12'5" and the wall with the main door can accommodate a sofa length 10' getting closer to the light switch near the door, so I was thinking 8'6" sofa so that it does not extend from under the 3 windows. I have some markings on the floor for an 8'6" X 9'6" sectional sofa in tiny blue tapes from before.

The dark bookcase is going away. The stairs are a dark shade of brown but looks much brighter in the picture

How does the area where the console is relate to the living room? Can you give us a photo that shows both of them at once?

And what are the dimensions of the living room? You say it can handle 100 x 100", but that sectional looks like it will virtually fill the space?

And what will the room be used for? Lounging and conversation only, with no TV?

So if you want to use the sectional here is how it might be laid out, however, I don't think you have the room for it.

If you use a corner unit and two armless sections or a corner unit and one armless section & another corner section. I have pointed out the dimensions below so you require 109.65" to the window or 104.7" to the windows. I'm just not sure you have 9ft for the modular sectional.

Beverly, thanks a lot for putting so much effort into making the image. That's how I picture it. Although no tv under the stairs. I would like 2 accent chairs there. If at all the family feels the need to put a tv it can be hung on the wall where the dark brown book case is currently.

The three window wall is pretty long. If I let the sofa extend farther than the three windows into the space between the entrance and the windows, I may be able to get 11' (plus 18" for a plant or something next to the sofa).

The other wall is 12'5". Subtracting the window (3') I think 9' will fit although it makes me think I should use the other side for the longer piece of the sectional

Does that look like something that can work?

If not a sectional, what other options would you recommend?

Thanks, decoenthusiaste. I meant I don;t want patterns on the sofa for it to stand out much, and sort of blend into the room. I would like the accents to speak more. Those are some lovely sofa pics. I personally love chaise not sure if I can accommodate it into the room.

I like the mirror idea for entrance. If the console is brought into the room under the stairs then I would lose seating capacity of the two chairs under there. Or the console table can go where the dark brown book case is currently. Does that still keep the room together?

Can i have chairs with the back towards the main entrance?

Thanks groveraxle. There is a den right up the stairs where kids watch tv/computer games. And there is a tv in the family room. So i was thinking of keeping the living room just for lounging, and entertaining guests. Also extra seating during bigger gatherings.

It is hard for us to entertain guests in the family room currently, with the tv being the focus.

We do have a small space and small rooms.

A chaise sofa will be much smaller than a sectional but will give you the same look with a smaller footprint. When the chaise portion is reversible you have many more arrangement options. It is just better balanced if the console takes up no more than 75% of the wall it is on. You want it to be framed by wall all around it. Move it and let's see.

Yes, you can have chairs with their back to the entrance. You can also have a sofa there, which would actually help define the entrance better and make the room feel cozier.

Remember with a sectional, you actually lose that corner space; no one ever sits there. Sectionals work better for a TV room where people want to either sprawl or cuddle.

Your room is small. You do not have room for that huge thing, and no, it does NOT go with the pretty piece you have pictures.

Your husband is going to have to do that rod again - it cannot stay that way. One does not look for studs when putting up curtain rods; one uses high quality anchors of some sort. A small locally owned hardware store can give your husband advice on anchors.

I think furnishings like this would work better with your distressed sage cabinet. That cabinet is a bit 'farmhouse distressed' furniture.

Time to take out the tape measure and see how much actual room you have for what you think you can do.

You'll be hard pressed to actually find a sofa that is only 3 ft. deep. Most are deeper than that. I would say that you need about 12'- 14 ft to create these arrangements.
