offset faucet - dumb idea?
Comments (11)There are pro's to it, as well! It's just that my feeling for it doesn't stem from the actual pros/cons conversation. I think I love them because they are near to what I think of as the best type of faucet, one with a handle seperate from the faucet itself. I don't like to reach into the center of the sink area, directly in front of me, to reach something. When I sit at a desk or table I arrance my "extra things" like forks, water glasses, pencil jars to either the left or right. You don't really see waiters piling forks across the plate from you. So it's weird to reach directly across my activity zone to pick up/use an item. I much prefer to have the in a central location but with the handle off to the side. That's not very popular either. BUT an offset faucet kinda sparks that interest in me. Sigh. One thing to consider is that if you pick a low faucet without much reach it might not easily clean the sink. You may discover yourself aligning your body with the front of the faucet instead of the middle of the sink causing a cramped work area on one side....See Moreundermount cast iron sink/wood counter
Comments (5)Isn't the Bakersfield sink a drop in, not an undermount? We have the Kohler Lakefield cast iron sink mounted under a chestnut counter. It is not hung from the countertop, it's sitting on the cabinet that is under the sink. Undermounts are great for wood counters. Our faucet is mounted on the chestnut and has been in for about 7 years now. The counter is finished with several coats of Waterlox. This finish has protected the countertop very well in general, but there is a small spot of rot at the base of the faucet where water sat for long periods of time. Be sure to seal the underside of your counter, and any holes you have cut into the countertop. This will prevent warping and other water related problems....See More24" sink cabinet - Good idea? Bad idea?
Comments (24)Lots of useful points here, thanks. After doing some measuring, we would up tentatively deciding that we'll put in a 36" sink cabinet. We'd have so little room in a 24" cab around a garbage disposal (assuming same model we have now, and assuming the drain is in the center) that we'd be hard pressed to store trash under the sink. So with a 24" cabinet, we'd probably wind up losing 15" somewhere else to making a dedicated trash pull out. Thus it's actually efficient to just go to the 36" sink base. (The 30" doesn't work as well as 24 and 36 sizes, for various reasons involving window placement and ikea sizing.) If we stay with this decision, it seems we'll have a lot of latitude in selecting a sink size / configuration. I'll almost certainly go ahead and move to a larger sink - the question will be whether to maximize the potential of the large cabinet or keep the sink scaled to down a bit since the kitchen is smallish and the window in front of which the sink will be set is just 30". With the current cabinet choices open to me, my main work areas in the kitchen will be 33" to the right of the sink cabinet base, and 54-61" on the left of it. Plus however much smaller the sink opening is than the 36" span of the base cabinet. A little more prep space is always a good thing, but so is making dirty mixing bowls disappear....See MoreFaucet and sink combo for a Plain English inspired kitchen revamp
Comments (57)I splurged and went with the brass. The wait won't be that big of a deal since everything else is so behind schedule anyway! Next round of questions: Should I do a small backsplash in butcher block? Our countertops will be exclusively butcher block and the backsplash white shiplap. I quite like the look of the wood back splashes in the DeVol and Plain English kitchens shown here. Yay or nay? If you like them, how tall and how thick should they be? Also in this one photo attached the backsplash is installed behind the counter rather than on top which is how I'd imagine doing it. Any idea which is preferable? I was going to do IKEA solid oak counters but have accepted that it really can't be a DIY job since I chose an undermount sink with curved corners and don't have the skill to confidently make that cut. We'll spend a bit more on having them and and finished, ready to install. I'm leaning toward Eastern Maple because it's hard and quite pale. That's a better choice than very old reclaimed fir I'd imagine, even if it has a cool backstory....See More- 5 years ago
