Sprinkler system pipe repair
Comments (2)OK, the solution is tricky to do the first time but you can handle it if your very careful and a bit lucky. Dig a hole away from the valve about 12-18" long and about 2"-3" deeper than the pipe. Exposing the pipe all around so you can cut it off. Cut off the pipe as close to the bushing as you can without cutting into the bushing. Cut carefully. Cut off the pipe a few inches past the break. When you have this done you will see the pipe inside the bushing. Take a hacksaw blade out of your hacksaw and carefully cut through the pipe BUT not into the bushing. Be very careful. Move over inside the pipe about 1/4" and make another cut. Take a hammer and a very thin flat screw driver and very carefully tap the screw driver between the pipe and the bushing. Go slow and DONT hit hard. Angle the screw driver slightly toward the middle of the pipe so your applying most of your tapping to the pipe and not the bushing. If all goes well you will pop out a bit of the pipe in a grove 1/4" wide. Now carefully work the rest of the pipe out by tapping the screw driver between the pipe and the bushing working around the pipe. Often the pipe will pop out in one or 2 larger pieces. Be sure to get all small bits out. Repair the pipe/bushing with a bit extra glue and primer and it should be as good as new. If at any point the bushing cracks/splits you will have to replace the whole valve. Good luck, Tom...See MoreFixing wet PVC pipe
Comments (4)A couple of years ago I had a dump truck deliver a load of top soil. The truck backed up over a burried PVC water line and broke the line, I did not notice it until about an hour later. Called a plumber and he came out. He shut the water off at the supply valve and then dug the area around the leak out then used a plastic drink cup to remove the standing water around the PVC pipe. He made the repair right there using the purple primer on all the connections and then brushed on the cement. Put every thing together, covered the hole, turned the water back on and it was fixed. He took no steps to remove any water in the supply line. He just wiped the outside of the supply pipe to make sure it was clean of dirt. I commented that I did not know you could do what he did while everything was wet. He said it was no problem with PVC. He said it is not like making a solder conection on copper pipe....See Morehow to you repair lawn springer PVC pipe? Coupling won't fit!!!
Comments (7)Jaansu, I live in a small town in Oregon. The nearest Lowes is twenty miles away---and their stock is often not very good and is usually in a mess. (They don't neaten it up, and things can be in other bins or on other shelves than where it should be.) Anyway, my local hardware store had a 3/4 inch coupling (around three bucks) that I had to get just a day or two ago. Anyway, the moral of the story is just that you should be able to find it locally. Just go to another hardware store and tell them that you want a repair coupling and tell them what it is for. Be sure to check the size of your pvc pipe before you go. (Don't ask me how I knew to say that!)...See MoreBreak in sprinkler system pipe
Comments (2)It's really an easy repair. Probably a 10 min. repair max for a professional once it's dug up. Possibly 1 hr. for the layperson. It will probably take you longer to hook up the fuuny pipe than it will to make the PVC repair! Parts required: 1x1x1/2" SST Tee 1x3/4" SS Reducer bushing 3/4" SS Ell 3/4" SS Coupling 3/4" pipe Cut the 1" pipe next to the tee and glue new tee w/ RB. Put a short piece of 3/4" into RB to the length of the 3/4" pipe that is perpendicular, or on the right in the bottom photo. Cut the existing 3/4" pipe back a bit to the right on the bottom photo. Maybe 6" or so. Glue the 3/4" coupling onto the existing pipe and then glue a piece of 3/4" into the coupling to extend it to where the ell will go. Cut the 3/4" to length for the ell and dry fit to make sure the lengths are correct. If so, glue the ell onto the 3/4" on the right of the bottom photo FIRST, the pull the 3/4" w/ the ell back and glue in into the tee w/ the small piece of 3/4" pipe glued into it SECOND. Reconnect the funny pipe to the head and you're basically finished. It's important to do this repair IN THIS ORDER or it could become a real PITA. Good luck!
