Does anyone else have Texas Star hibiscus going dormant? I'm in 9a

I've only grown these in Z10a, so I have no idea how they do up here. I know they go dormant, but one seems to be going dormant much sooner than the other.

Mine never bloomed this year, and one group of them started dying back, so I dug them up. I'll replant them in a hopefully better location, as they aren't dead. The roots are fine. They never did get much over 3 feet tall. I think they weren't getting enough sun, but that's hard to come by in my yard.

Just bumping this up. I want to know about when they go dormant in 9a.

Don't have one, but now I think I want one!

Here's what I found when I looked it up:

"The Texas Star hibiscus (Hibiscus coccineus) grows in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 through 10, although it may die back to the ground each fall in zones 5 through 8. Hibiscus shrubs can reach up to 8 feet tall in areas where they don't experience winter dieback, but in colder regions or with pruning, they grow to only about 4 feet high...."

Perhaps the one going dormant now is in a slightly different microclimate - maybe getting a bit less light?

Well, after living with in laws for 6 months while the house gets built, we finally moved into the new house 2 weeks ago, I promptly planted 4 taxodium hybrids as soon I get a chance. I have a nice grove of escarpment live oak in the corner of backyard. Never had that much shade so I'm a little excited about what to plant there. Perhaps a couple of JMs with nice red fall color from my brother that he grew from seeds. That's in Houston where he lives so I'm curious to see how they do in bit colder weather over here. There are deer around here but they don't seem to wander close to houses judging on plants on older houses. I guess they are too scared of us unlike at in laws where they come like dogs wanting treats. I've had a couple of big nice looking bucks come right up to me and start eating deer corns out of the bucket! I'm going to miss that. Just so cool...

Do deer eat hibiscus plants? In: Flower Gardening Answer Yes deer eat everything. You might try rosemary, lantanna some sages. Deer typically do not like some of the stronger smelling plants. Herbs and traditional natural plants tend to make them move on to other people's tender plants. I hope this helps. Jessaka, I do selective pruning on my Texas Star Hibiscus by cutting off 2 or 3 limbs flush with the main stem of the plant. That opens up one particular area and keeps it from shading the adjacent butterfly weed. Before we put up the taller deer fencing, I never had to do selective pruning because the deer would reach over the shorter fence and relentlessly prune it for me. You can save seeds from the dried pods, but watch them carefully. Mine get some sort of little bug on them many years during late mid- to late-summer or early fall and that bug will destroy the seed before it is mature enough to harvest. I don't know what the bugs are, but think they must be unique to the mallow family because I often see them on swamp mallow and on hollyhocks too, although I don't see them every year. Yes, the old dead stems stay unless you lop them off, but I always put a stake up next to the spot where they are so I know they're there. Mine has struggled this year, but I'm surprised it lived at all, to be honest. It was pretty pitiful when I bought it. I don't know if it will get large enough to bloom this year, and honestly, I'm considering digging it up and putting it into a container to see if I can get it to grow better. I had about 10 different varieties and cultivars in SC. They were late coming up, but bloomed like crazy all summer and put out lots of seeds If you just tuck it into a place where the foliage can be ornamental and forget about it, one day you'll look and find huge, gorgeous blooms. Well worth waiting for.

Some hardy type hibiscus do seem to go dormant early here. Others don't get going good till fall. I'm hoping mine will flower a little more before fall sets in. Grasshoppers have been horrid this summer. They have been devouring all the hibiscus leaves so bad they barely flowered plus they ate up the seed pods.

Thanks Carol and SJN. Yes, it was getting very little sun, and I think it was TOO wet (if that's possible, because they love wet spots). My other one up on the hill doesn't get enough sun either, but it isn't dying back, so all I can think of is it was kept too wet. Neither have bloomed, so I definitely have to find a sunnier spot this year. My fall-blooming hibiscus (H. acetosella, H. radiatus) are doing great and I can't wait for them to bloom.

Funny that it says they only go dormant in z8. That must be old info before they changed the zones, because my friend has one in Z9b (he sent me the seeds) and his goes dormant as well. Even when I was in Z10a, my perennial hibiscus went dormant in the winter, and some didn't come back if we had a freeze, but the Texas Star always did. I had it in z7a in SC, and it came back every year and bloomed like mad all summer long.
