Advice on my baby Epiphyllum
Comments (1)Get it out of the plastic and into a pot so it can not be rapped up in damp towels and a ziplock. They are fairly dormant in the winter but it is not a good time to be moving roots around or keeping them wrapped up in plastic. they need to breath a bit. Growth is not going to happen in the winter much but rot is what you are setting it up for. with the ziplock. A nice draining mix with humus and bark. I would not water it immediately after planting but I usually give mine water once a month in winter. Good luck....See MorePlease help me diagnose what's going on with my Streptocarpus leaf!
Comments (9)Some kind of mechanical damage - just trim the tip of the leaf. The best - Fiskars pinking shears Deckle - the brown handle ones. Make a new rounded tip look as natural as possible. http://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-Deckle-Paper-Scissor-12-92187897/dp/B000BDH9KU For Streptocarpus - any kind of mishap - the tips of the leaves suffer - not enough water, too much water. They are kind of expendable in nature - in a dry season Streps sacrifice the tips of the leaves to decrease the water consumption. IMHO - the damage is cosmetic and not the cause to worry....See MoreHelp me get to know my new Fiddle Leaf Fig!
Comments (13)Madi, Pls do not take any advice from Mike 223908** as he has no idea what he is talking about. You appear to be paying attention, reading & trying to learn, which is always nice to see. Pls wait 'til others who know the difference btwn good & bad advice come along to help. In particular, any Ficus searches around here that yield info from Al (Tapla) are worth reading & very helpful. Mike does the opposite (than try to learn, just parrots everything he reads, whether right or wrong info) & has already been asked repeatedly to stop buying more plants to kill & now he will be told to keep his bad, uninformed advice to himself. (Apologies for sounding mean to Mike here below, but there's history here.) Mike: pls don't help anyone, as you have no clue what you're doing, are killing all your own plants & we do not want that influence on others. Learn to take care of your own plants before trying to help others w/ theirs. ETA: ** or from Mike the Fiddle Leaf Fig Guy...See Moresomething is going wrong with my fiddle leaf fig
Comments (2)Leaves shed due to any of several potential causes. Older leaves shedding is often from a decrease in light levels that occurred in the not too distant past, nutritional deficiencies of the mobile nutrients in particular (N, P, K, Mg mainly), root congestion, a high level of dissolved solids (salts) in the soil solution, or root congestion are the most common causes. Chill, and especially sudden chill is also causal when we get into the colder months. Though it might initially seem strange, a drought response from over-watering or under-watering is also a major cause of shedding. Over-watering inhibits the plant's ability to take up water; this, due to an insufficient supply of oxygen needed to drive the uptake process. When we over-water, the plant's chemical messengers tell plant central that it better initiate the survival mechanism of acting to limit respirational water loss by shedding leaves. Make sure you're monitoring moisture levels carefully with something other than your finger. It's much more important to have an idea of what moisture conditions are deep in the pot than an inch or two below the surface, and to withhold water until the soil is nearly dry. Using a wooden dowel as a 'tell' is very effective. If you want me to post something I wrote a while back about using a 'tell', tell me and I'll hop to it. Al...See MoreMs houhouland
