That second picture with what looks like a shadow line but is actually where a shadow was and prevented the rest of the leaf from burning. Any leaf burn is permanent and cosmetic only. It will not spread. If it was too severe it would turn black and you could trim off that portion. I believe that part of the leaf is still doing some work to help the plant grow so leave it alone. As far as what kind of orchid is it - I have an idea but I'd like to see some better pictures of the p[seudobulbs. Has it flowered and if so do you have pictures?

Dave, Have you actually determined that you have a fungus problem? Have you determined that you COULD have a fungus problem in the future that you need to guard against? I'm not a big fan of the 'organic' no-spray method and firmly believe in 'better living through chemistry', but you should actually only use it if and when you have determined that is actually a fungus problem. Daconil and the other crap often recommended to be sprayed are poisonous you to and everything else around you. Why saturate your environment when you don;t really need to. Many of the people on GW live in environments where gardens were never intended to grow and they are fighting an uphill battle all the way. On the other hand, we have this wonderful semi-arid desert to grow in, and we have out own problems, like high winds and hail infestations :) We rarely ever have problems with the bacterial infections because it is just too dry. I have lived here all my life and the only thing me or my family has ever had to deal with were mosquitoes and miller moths. --->Rob

I'll defer to the more experienced growers, but from what I've read/heard, the bottom leaves yellowing is normal. I think most varieties do it.

Hi Straw; I enjoy reading your posts, your background in chemistry brings a unique perspective, and interesting information. The reason that I believe that damage is topical and possibility caused by the soap spray is that it "happened overnight". To me that would mean a chemical, such as something sprayed on it, or mechanical, such as insect damage. I have never seen nutritional deficiencies occur that fast. Now your theory on the soap precipitating out calcium is interesting. However, I don't believe that the calcium was in a "solution" to begin with. If it were, then the rain would have washed it away without the help of soap. The link that you posted shows soap precipitating calcium out of tap water, so it seems to me that using soap could, in a very small way, add calcium to the soil by "unbinding" it from water. I truly don't believe that it was the problem because soap is used in agriculture as a "sticker spreader", a wetting agent and an insecticide and I have never seen any problems. I would want to know the ph of the soil in the pot before adding lime to the soil. Too high a ph will cause deficiencies of minors.
