Once charming old house, now looks like a 70's McDonalds. Help!
Comments (6)macv, I was being sarcastic with the McDonalds comparison, I wasn't even alive in the 70's...thanks for setting me straight, it looks like a ranch painted in McDonald's colors. Barb5, thanks for the tip, I will put my question in there, this was my first post. If you click on the picture and click again it will bring you to a bigger picture. The garage is detached and in the back, essentially he same style and roof but I am going to put carriage doors on it. Karen belle, why do you suggest staying away from white trim? Thanks!...See MoreInstalling hardwood in a 70's house with different angles
Comments (3)Angle at outside of living room to dining room Looking from entry to dining room, kitchen partial wall to left, hallway goes off to the right. The hardwood will go in the kitchen too, the flooring laying around is just that, trying to decide how to run it, and excuse the mess! Fireplace wall not perpendicular to wall hutch is on Entry, kitchen, dining room on left, living room on right. Pictures have the 5400 lbs of white oak in "wheatfield" flooring that came today, acclimating. My eclectic taste, have a new dark leather chesterfield coming as well as three bookcases for along dining room wall to make it more a "library", Have more American Empire Revival furniture including a library table and round pedestal table at another house to bring in once I get the floors done. Creek runs below deck beyond the drapes. Help!...See MoreSmall exterior makeover on 70's house
Comments (28)Shutters. Yeah, I was an early adopter of the size-appropriateness, but there's more to it. Hinges, dogs, latches, and this: if they are louvered, the louvers need to be pointing up when they are open, so that they point down when they are closed, letting water run down them. But, since very few people ever close their functioning shutters in the US, the louvers need to point down when they are open so they don't rot. Personal family story: a relative visiting from the old country told my grandfather his shutters were upside down. He flipped them accordingly, but the next year he noticed trouble with the water running behind the shutters. So back they flipped. Incorrect but not a problem. So, don't get into the math of the shutters. They are decorative. Just make for a pleasing proportion. Your house is charming. Consider putting a cement or limestone cap on the planter, put non-living seasonal decor on it, maybe something on the wall behind, and enjoy. My personal presence for metals is brass, but that's just me....See MoreNeed curb appeal on "that 70's house"!
Comments (11)A dark color will be a good choice. It's modern and will make the different siding finishes less obvious. Hale Navy is a favorite navy blue and I think it would look great with your brick. Make the front door color something that relates directly to the brick. (the garage door should be the body color.) The wide trims and the mullions are steering very clear of a 70s design, so just go with what you like and lean into more modern options when you can....See MoreTC
