Looking for suggestions on this fireplace next to TV design
I'm doing the 'modern farmhouse' aesthetic inside and out, and the fireplace has been a spot I'm not 100% sure on a design.
There's 12' between the sheetrock. I'm looking to install either a freestanding or insert stove, or gas insert, but not an open fireplace as this will be a very air tight house. I may even just choose an electric insert, but backup heat may ease anxiety of a future buyer.
Has anyone done or seen a similar setup, or have any feedback on this design?
I'll likely wrap the fireplace facade around the left wall, modeling constrictions prevent showing that correctly.

Comments (23)I would not do it. It puts unnecessary strain on your neck or forces people to lie back like the dead and it's hard enough to teach my kids to not slouch. You might not think the neck thing matters but we all get old .. if we're lucky. It also makes me feel like I'm in a bar, an airport, or a bad restaurant. Sorry, if that offends anyone, it's how I feel and so far all of my clients have agreed without needing any persuasion.But that doesn't mean it's wrong to do it. Only the owner's family needs to like it. To me it's just not that difficult to put the TV to one side with the great adjustable brackets now available. The proper height of a TV is easy to determine, just sit on a couch, look straight ahead, and have someone measure the point you feel comfortable looking at. Perhaps take an average of your family members. If I had to do it, I would at least put the fireplace box tight to the floor, the mantel low, and be able to enclose the TV when not in use. These things are not pretty. It would also help to recess it and tip it downward for better viewing and less reflected light. Comments (13)I agree that painting the back wall behind the TV black will help hide the empty space. If I had to place a TV in this space I would probably center it. You are already way over viewing comfort height and a few more inches won't make a big difference. I would also do something to camoflage the TV. I'm not a huge fan of mirrors, but they do have mirrors that you can place over a TV and they look like a mirror when the TV is not on but the TV picture is displayed when the TV is on. 5 years agoFlo, I like that last idea most. I want to try to keep the cabinetry there, and it will be that traditional style if it is. But maybe I'll have to change it up. I'll need somewhere to store equipment, but I think I can get clever and have storage above the fireplace itself.

This will be a 100% electric home, and the fireplace for backup was my fathers idea for that power outage anxiety which I just don't feel is justified where we are, or with a super efficient house.
I submitted my plans yesterday calling for a propane FP, and the building dept. would've needed a permit for it. That extra bit of paperwork was all I needed to say forget the whole thing, we'll put an electric one in and buy a backup generator for the house with the savings.
