6 Random Raspberry/blackberry questions!
Comments (9)Hi nguyena1- Good questions! 1.) I've found there really is no stopping blackberries. You can tip them at 3' to encourage lateral growing, but they're still going to go up and up. The top of my trellis is about 8', and I'll probably top them 4 times throughout the season... they're that vigorous. (Though perhaps not quite as much in their first year.) 2.) With the everbearing raspberries... Do not tip them. Just let them grow. You can prune them back at the very end of the fall/early winter when their tops die. (or just do that in the spring). 3.) When you prune off the dead tops is really up to you. You can do it in the beginning or end of the dormant season. For me, I wait until early spring because at that point youâÂÂll see a nice dividing line between the green lower part which is still alive, and the dead top (so I know IâÂÂm not cutting off too much, or leaving some dead cane). DonâÂÂt forget, youâÂÂll also need to prune out the dead 2nd year (floricanes) after the give their fruit on the lower part of the cane in late summer. 4.) As I understand it, youâÂÂre right on the edge of where of the climate where raspberries can grow. IâÂÂve read that the âÂÂBabaâ variety would probably be your best bet for someone in your situation. But, since I donâÂÂt live there, or grow that variety, take my advice with a grain of salt. Others here may be able to give advice on the shade. I do know, even around here in 6b RI, that I do get some raspberry druplet disorder which is caused by excessive sun/UV, etc. 5.) YouâÂÂve got some good varieties there, but IâÂÂm still worried about your climate when it comes to the raspberries. Might you want to start with some test varieties first before you jump all-in? Having grown Heritage, Caroline, and Prelude, I would toss the Heritage and put in Baba as mentioned above. I havenâÂÂt grown Boyne, but according to my Nourse chart, it (and the Caroline unfortunately) might be slightly less tolerant of the heat? You might want to put Anne on the end as for me it doesnâÂÂt grow very tall/vigorously⦠but, it probably has the biggest and best tasting raspberries that I grow. 6.) Yes, containment is extremely important. Without it, all the varieties will grow together and you wonâÂÂt be able to tell where one starts and the next one ends. That may not sound too bad, but if you have one variety that does well, and another one that does poorly, you wonâÂÂt be able to remove the slacker. For me, I get containment by mowing around all my patches. In one area, I have a barrier that goes down 10âÂÂ, and they havenâÂÂt gone under that yet. But, others have talked about raspberries tunneling down 15â or even more. For more on the varieties I grow, you can see my âÂÂMy Pageâ link. Hope this helps! -Glenn Here is a link that might be useful: Nourse Farms raspberry chart...See MoreSaturday's Random Questions......
Comments (16)1. Who is your favorite actress? -- Jodi Foster, I guess. But there are probably others I like as well. 2. Who is your favorite actor? -- Definitely Will Smith. I like every type of movie he does. I will go out of my way to see an interview when he is on a program. I even watch old Fresh Prince episodes on Nick At Night! I just like the guy, and his family. The one celeb I really do care about. He just seems like an all around good guy. 3. How many pillows do you sleep with in bed? -- 2 4. How do you like your eggs? Scrambled, overy easy, hard etc? -- I'm either in the mood for scrambled or in the mood for over easy. 5. Do you like bagels? If so, what do you put on them? (cream cheese, butter) -- I like them toasted with cream cheese and a little jelly. 6. Do you always have gas in your car? -- Techinically, yes. Let's just leave it at that. ;o) 7. Do you stock up on toilet paper? -- I buy enough to last 2-3 weeks at a time. Which might look like stocking up to a smaller household. I also use the big rolls, or I'd change the roll a couple times a day! 8. What do you wear to bed to sleep in? (P.J.'s, sweats etc) -- Depends on the weather, from flannel PJs to a big, old shirt. 9. Do you dream a lot? -- Oh YES! I have vivid dreams, more than one per night, and I might remember them for a couple hours or I might never forget some of them. I wake up from them disoriented and more tired than before I slept. I have to get up and check on the kids, house, car, etc. before I can sleep again. They aren't scary, just disorienting. Close enough to reality, but like an alternate reality. I used the enjoy my dreams, but lately they keep me from going back to sleep and I wish I could just have one night of dreamless sleep! Are you looking forward to Valentine's Day this year? -- I'm indifferent. Our schools get a winter break in February, and I think it falls the week of V-Day this year. I'm looking forward to that (at least when the alarm goes off every morning). Does that count?...See MoreRandom small questions, bundled
Comments (19)Thank you, Oakley, BusyBee, Patty_cakes, Nosoccermom, Tibbrix, Outside Playing, MaddieLee, KSWL, Roarah, Peony 4, and Palimpsest! 1 Tension rods; as soon as i saw Pal's second post, I went to Country Curtains and found some with the perfect dimensions and finish. The curtains will be tab or maybe held with string so the rods will be quite visible. (AnnieD, these curtains are all your fault I hope you know. And they will be in that mottled hand dyed fabric you suggested!) 2. Shuffleboard: Yes, we want to keep it. Of course, now that Pal has put the idea in my head I think it should be redone in lovely tiles!! Geez, Pal, you always upsell me with your ideas. I don't have a picture that is head on. Glad to hear it is "coming back". Who knew? Slippery paint? See, you can learn ANYTHING on GW. Thx Maddielee! Thanks for all the ideas. Will look for a template and/or a driveway person. Or, take Patty_cakes great idea! Maybe they could do something funky! PS Pal, I don't see you as a hopscotchin' guy. 3 Poker - some great ideas. I decided to list them all and let DH choose; I'm better at choosing food for distaff affairs. Guy food makes me a little queasy! 4 Fabric - I will have to ask a seamstress about my choices for very light to no gathering. Tibbrix, the chairs are woven white and a very dark navy. I am trying to pick that up. Plus I have navy ocotopi plates. Good news, though, I am picking up the turquoise in three places now; the fridge, the hutch back wall, our new exterior french door I decided on for more light. 5 Pulls - Good point. I need to order a sample, and I need to find a Tall drawer. It may be harder to open then what I am used to. I may go form over function anyway; all the dishes will be stored in the Butler's pantry and this particular d/w is for secondary use. PS Tsk tsk, Outside, you were only allowed to comment on function. I prob wouldn't use those unless they were or could be patina'ed. : )...See MoreSaturday's Random Questions.............

LOL! Did you do anything exciting lastnight? If so what? -- hosted a few teens, friends of DS's for pool/pizza/cake. I enjoyed see DS with his friends, I like his friends, they are good for him. Are you Craving anything right now? If so what? -- no, not really What is more important, love or trust? -- That's tough. I'm gonna go with love, though, cuz I'm thinking of my kids. There may be times they shake my trust, but not my love. Do you like the smell of oranges? -- yes, actually, very much...See Morewritersblock (9b/10a)
