Organic way to get rid of Bermuda grass
Comments (156)No one asking anyone to read ALL those replies. If you do not want to know what we know, skip our replies. On a new thread or topic, we will come over & reply & you will be back where you are now. jolj(7b/8a) henry, I am going to try solarization on my bahia grass. 90% of the things on this thread will not eradicate bahia grass. This includes round up, which kills the tops, but not the deep roots. Round up will not kill nut sage/ nut grass or common dew berry vines. So I will try this on the bahia. I have heard that the solarization may kill the soil food web, when it kills the weeds. I am planning to sheet compost the beds after I kill the grass/ weeds. I have been told that tilling kills the soil food web. Not sure who is right or if it matters, I give vegetables away every season including the winter. I grow more then I can use, then I must be doing something right. Comments (23)JB are a real problem in the coastal south east. The grubs feed on grass roots. Then the moles feed on the grubs. These 2 activities alone cause majore damage to lawns. Add to that the neighbors dog trying to track down the moles by digging up the yard. Thats 3 forms of damage just in the larval stage. I read about a product several years ago called "Milky Spore" I never used it due to the high cost, at that time I had very little to spend. Milky spore is said to be a biological agent that will cause death to it's off spring and lasts for many years in the soil. Sort of like a parasitic attack I think. The article I read was from my local extension service. I have seen the product on shelves in the stores. The article mentioned this product works best when used community wide. If you have killed off the grubs in your yard thats good. But you can still have problems with the adults flying in from the neighbors yards. So why don't I use it now? well I don't live on the coast and they are not a problem here....See MoreLooking for the easiest way to get rid of my grass
Comments (29)Roundup and a whole bunch of other weed killers, including the supposed long term ones are not nearly as nasty as some think. I have a crushed granite driveway parking lot and last summer I put five different kinds of weed/grass killers on it to kill weeds. Not one single one came even close to killing all the weeds, including areas that were repeated ly resprayed. They can be annoying on a lawn when one gets careles and over-spray gives a temporary brown spot, but unless one uses agricultural/commercial grade spray, I believe they are over-rated. The only thing I ever used on the drive-way that lasted a full year was old gasoline that had become to much like varnish. As I wrote in another thread, IF you can get help and have access to a rental store. Rent a sod-cutter and cut the sod off and either haul it away or have them dig a pit deep enough so that a covering of dirt can be put over the stacked sod, even if three fourths are above grade, as it will turn into a dirt mound quite quickly....See MoreWhat's the best way to get rid of bindweed???
Comments (219)I have lots and lots of bindweed all in my pachysandra and have come up with a solution to killing it without killing the pachysandra. I do use round up on the foam spray setting. First I gather up as many strands as I can in one clump andI put in into a slit in paper plate that I have cut one slit to the middle. It opens easily to put the bindweed on the plate . Then I spray it on the plate carefully using the foam setting. When dry I remove the plate and leave the weed for several weeks so it can get dead to the root. I will also try this on creeping Charlie. I have also used canes for the bindweed to crawl up and also tried putting a clump in a Baggie and the spray inside bag with roundup. That works but the paper plate is so much easier.Hope this helps someone else. I feel like I am going to get control after several years and hundreds or thousands of these vines!! lenette...See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
