Japanese beetles- best way to get rid of them?
Comments (23)JB are a real problem in the coastal south east. The grubs feed on grass roots. Then the moles feed on the grubs. These 2 activities alone cause majore damage to lawns. Add to that the neighbors dog trying to track down the moles by digging up the yard. Thats 3 forms of damage just in the larval stage. I read about a product several years ago called "Milky Spore" I never used it due to the high cost, at that time I had very little to spend. Milky spore is said to be a biological agent that will cause death to it's off spring and lasts for many years in the soil. Sort of like a parasitic attack I think. The article I read was from my local extension service. I have seen the product on shelves in the stores. The article mentioned this product works best when used community wide. If you have killed off the grubs in your yard thats good. But you can still have problems with the adults flying in from the neighbors yards. So why don't I use it now? well I don't live on the coast and they are not a problem here....See MoreNeighbors
Comments (2)I had to check out that post on the mid atlantic forum - it was about deer devastation and made me really glad I live in town. There used to be one for coastal communities, but it was pretty inactive - not sure if it's even still in existence. Now I just visit trees, shrubs, perennials, and of course our dear old NE forums. The landscape design forum is fun, too, but those guys can get a little cranky, especially when people are asking for a free design and/or when newbies post "mock ups" with all sorts of plants "scaled to fit." The crankiness gets to you eventually, so I stopped even lurking there....See MoreWhat's the Best/Quickest Way to Get Rid of Paint Odor
Comments (6)Here are some ideas: Deodorize With Charcoal Charcoal is a tried-and-true odor removal technique that can be used to deodorize any powerful chemical odor. It's an excellent room deodorizer because of its large surface area, and its odor-adsorbent qualities. You can use activated carbon, but ordinary cooking charcoal is usually enough to remove the solvent odors from a freshly-painted room. Here's how you can use charcoal to remove the paint smell from a room: â¢Lightly crush whole pieces of wood charcoal into small pieces. It's OK to pulverize the charcoal into fine powder, but the particles may float around and stick to the wet paint. â¢Place the charcoal pieces inside a bucket together with some pieces of wet paper towels or rags. â¢Place the bucket in the middle of the room and leave it there overnight. The charcoal will then absorb the odors and fumes from the solvent, leaving you with a fresh-smelling room the next day. Light a Candle One time-tested way to get rid of solvent fumes from a freshly-painted room is to light a candle or a match to burn out the fumes. A trick used by many veteran house painters is to light a candle in the middle of the room and let it stay there for about three hours. The open flame will burn out the flammable substances in the solvent, like benzene and other hydrocarbons. Candles and matches still pose a potential fire hazard, especially if you've just painted an enclosed space. To minimize the risk of fire, place the candle on top of a bowl or a saucer of water to catch the hot wax, and prevent fire from spreading. It may also help to make a small dome out of wire netting to catch candle soot, especially if you've painted your ceiling. Use a Bucket of Water If you don't want to risk a fire hazard by lighting a candle to burn off the fumes, you can simply place a few buckets of water in the middle and around the room to absorb the solvent vapors. While not as effective as a candle, it is a safer option especially if you're painting a room finished or made with wood. The odors will be removed overnight, although you'll still have a faint smell of solvent that will linger and will go away in time....See MoreWhat is this grass/shrub and what's the best way to get rid of it?!
Comments (3)I'm guessing you are in the UK. In which case it is Carex pendula. A native but a self seeder and can be a nuisance. Not a disaster in that position but it will send babies out around the garden. Any herbicide will need to be specific for grass/sedge, not a broad leaf weed killer....See MoreGolden David
