Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

32 vs 36 inch stainless steel under mount

Anyone have any feedback on a 32 in vs 36 inch stainless steel undermount single bowl sink going into a 39 inch base cabinet. The cabinet would more than accommodate the larger sink but it seem as if there is a very limited selection in 36 inch sinks and I’m worried about replacement if the need should arise. Should I stick with the 32 inch options? Thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I have worked for a granite company, a plumbing /cabinet showroom, and a builder...and have never run into someone replacing an under-mount sink and not the counters. I would not let that be a deciding factor for you. Just make sure its a good gauge of stainless - 18g is pretty standard.

Here's my Rangecraft mounted 29" from my rangetop grates (about 30.25" from counter). It's 24" deep and 42" wide. It's hard to get a photo in my space that shows how it covered the front burners. The outside edge of the vent just barely covers front burner. I'm 5' 7.5" tall. DH is 6'. The only time I've hit the hood is when I'm wearing my extra tall cooking shoes, which I don't do often, and have my hair piled on my head in a big banana clip. Under these circumstances when I approach the rangetop from the corner of the hood, I sometimes hit my clip on the hood. My clip, not my head. If I approach straight on even in my tallest cooking shoes with big hair clip, I've never hit the hood. I don't recall DH ever hitting his head, nor do I recall anyone else in my kitchen hitting theirs. I wish the front interior of the hood covered the front burners. As it is now, I cook my smelliest, greasiest, smokiest stuff on the back center burner for better capture. If I try to do that on the front burners, some of the effluent still escapes the front of the hood because the capture part of the hood doesn't completely cover the burner. I remember reading that thread you linked when I was researching hoods. That was one of very few I read where people complained of hitting their head. From what I've read here over four years, most people don't have an issue with head banging.

"Can anyone who has a 16 gauge sink comment on whether it flexes when you push the bottom of it? i have an 18 gauge sink and it flexes a bit." It isn't the gauge of the steel; your sink is improperly mounted. It's probably a double bowl with no stanchion between the bowls and it's probably clipped or blocked in place. A strapped 20 gauge double bowl sink cannot budge as that would defy the laws of physics. If your sink is flexing, it's leaking. If it's leaking, it's unsanitary, creating bug habitat, and endangering any reinforcement rods in your top.

I just wanted to clarify a comment that Suzannes1 said above, "Silgranite would be worth investigating, although I don't prefer a dark colored sink". Please note that Silgranit comes in a number of colors including white and biscuit. See my link above to a Silgranit sink in the color biscuit which is a creamy and softer white than their "white". I think it may seem that Silgranit only is dark because so many people on this forum have chosen one of the dark Silgranit colors like Anthracite or Cafe Brown. That's because those colors show nothing, even if you spill red wine or spaghetti sauce, and also cause the dark color can look real sharp against granite. Our anthracite sink looks great with our Alaska White granite, and it seems to make the polished chrome of our professional-style faucet gleam more in contrast. Still no comment on the choice of a 3-bowl sink?

Purpleplume, I did not see my specific model before ordering. I believe it is a new model. I've looked at so many sinks that I imagine I did see a Ruvati sink. Because I have seen so many sinks, I knew what sort of features that I wanted so seeing my particular sink in person before ordering wasn't as big a deal as you would think. Also, there just were not many sinks that ticked off all the boxes that I wanted. That is--not zero radius, stainless steel, 16 gauge, 33" width, one basin, center drain, workstation. For example, I know that I hate zero radius sinks. The "working models" (sinks with actual water hooked up to them) that were zero radius sinks at the numerous showrooms I have visited all seemed to have gunk in the corners. So, I knew that I wanted a rounded radius corner. I could look at an internet picture and see what sort of corner the sink had without having to actually see it in person. The gauge of the sink is how thick it is. So if I know that a sink is 16 gauge, I don't have to see it actually in person to have a sense of its quality. The beauty of buying from Home Depot is that the sink was shipped to my house for free and is returnable. There are probably other stores with equally attractive selling policies. So, you can order the sink, and if you don't like it, simply return it.

I have never heard of them, and when I looked on their site, it doesn't seem to have a contact location (was trying to see where they are manufactured) Their website also wasn't 'secure' which is weird to me. I recommend Kohler, Elkay and Franke most often.

I just had a Krauss installed. Black composite granite. A 32 x 22. Single bowl. It looks HUGE to me in my teeny tiny galley kitchen. Krauss seems like a decent company and their reviews were good. I purchased it from Amazon. I do love my Prime.

I see a lot of sinks and 36" looks right to me. If you've got the countertop real estate, get the largest sink you can.

C-Tech makes great 16 gauge sinks.

Have your fabricator strap your sink in place with a Hercules Universal Sink Harness (Braxton Bragg) or a Sink Strap or two from Regent Stone Products. Not only will you get a more desirable thinner front rail because you don't need room for clips, changing the sink went from a 12-impossible-to-get-at-clips job to one or two easily accessible nuts. Straps don't rust away; clips do.

Replacing sinks and sink cutouts without replacing counters is my business and business is good. Every single time I think "No way will they pay that much for a new sink.", they do. I'm still cheaper than top replacement and none of my sinks are remotely comparable to the 100-on-a-pallet Chinese junk the fabricators give away for free.
