Damaged tree bark

Hello, I noticed on my aplle tree damaged bark. I would like to ask you if you have any experiece with something like this, what causes that and how to cure it. Thank you :)

i cant really focus on the pic.. are there holes drilled into the wood??? .. if so.. i might think woodpecker ... or some such ...

bark is basically dead ... you dont.... and it cant... be fixed ...

the real issue.. is what is under the bark.. or in the tree ... that is calling to the suspect ...

btw: may we presume a bored child could be ruled out ...

ps: how high up is this damage ... ive seen bark stripping from deer.. and cat ...

Thank you so much , I´ve realized that it could be on 100% the woodpecker, because I´ve found int the bark some larvae eggs

Thanks everyone. We haven't fertilized the trees yet. We're new to gardening and fruit trees and wanted to be organic. I just read something about organic gardeners and how they believe they shouldn't fertilize, but in fact we should. Kind of a "doh" moment. Sometimes you feel it's just something else you have to figure out. Any suggestions? Can you use all purpose ferts i use in the garden, 4-5-6 fox farm? Since I have it know it's probably better to use than waiting. Milehigh- thanks for the info on the tree wrap. Sounds a lot better than painting. Warranty? I didn't know trees came with warranties! I've emailed the nursery and included photos but haven't heard back from them.

Konrad it's such a beautiful tree :( It has so many flowers popping out it did the best out of all my trees it's still dormant too in the shade . The bugger chomped it so uneven all around some parts even below the stock some parts 6" above. Was thinking just try one bridge graft if it dies than I let it grow back in. The branches are not dried on the tree yet? How easy is it to graft the stock if I just cut the tree off it? I have never done that before Konrad. I have some nice apricot wood to use I would like to chop the tree right to the stock will that work?

@floral: Yes, I've been wondering if it's a person vs. nature.But I've no idea who or how to catch them, and I don't have the $ to buy my dad a security cam. So malicious if that's the case, who goes around breaking tree branches on ugly little trees :( There is a apartment building next to the house that was just recently finished. A week or so ago they finished tarring (?) the parking lot. They're probably still doing work there. The sidewalk was also only added a few months ago. @wisconsitom: Yes, I bought a Yardworx pruning saw yesterday. It made the cutting of the second branch much easier than the first. I keep reading online not to cut into the collar, but the collar is already partially broken in this case. I was thinking of cutting as below, but am not sure if that's also incorrect.

What is the source of the damage? A variety of factors can cause damage to the bark..., animals, cars, people, weather, guessing disease. I only have experience with damage caused by annual, autumnal deer rutting (this is not that kind of damage), In the case of damage caused by deer rutting, I have never lost a tree over the years due to this specific kind of damage. Note, plants (in this case trees), do not "heal", healing is an animal ability. Trees and other plants, compartmentalize the damage and eventually seal off and form new healthy tissue around the area of damage. I never do anything with deer rut damage, and the trees (within a few growing seasons), will seal up the damage and move on with life. However, as bengz above said, if something is till causing the bard to die back, that clearly is not a favorable sign.

i had a very old apple tree at my first house ... all kinds of problems ... i moved.. lol .... not my problem anymore ...lol

actually had i stayed.. i would have removed it .. it was a PIA ... and i wasnt really into the spraying regimen requisite for a decent crop ... and my attempt at pruning it into production was an utter failure ... lol ... no WWW back then ...

and then.. in late fall.. the rotting fruit.. and drunken bees and wasps ... maybe i did move because of the tree ...
