My new little laundry alcove (at last) - pics
Comments (25)Trailrunner, I'm not going to be much help with the beadboard. Home Depot offered two kinds: 1/4" pre-primed for painting, and 3/8" plywood. We bought the 3/8", and it seemed much heavier and more rigid than the 1/4". I don't know the size of the sheets, but I can tell you they were lying flat in the plywood aisle at HD. All I did was pay for them.....my son got them home and onto the porch, and the contractor took it from there. He installed them over the original double-plank (hemlock) construction of my old farmhouse. We used the same beadboard for the ceiling as well. I hope this small amount of information helps. Comments (8)Painting all the walls white is typical. There are, however, a lot of "whites". You spoke of painting the bedroom a cool color. Below is Benjamin Moore's Lily White on the wall with the window. On the left it is paired with beige and tan trim. On the right I paired it with Santorini Blue trim. That enhances the blue tint of Lily White. I recommend you consider which color(s) you prefer, then visit various paint manufacturer sites to see the colors in their color visualizer. My favorites are Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams because the have the largest variety of colors, but most sites will have a way for you to look at a color in a selected room. Remember that cabinets and trim should be painted with semi-gloss because it is more durable, and can take mild scrubbing. You can use eggshell or satin on the rest of the walls. Also, you may need to sand the cabinets to remove any finish before painting....See MoreNew condo design
Comments (12)This involves more than the kitchen, but solves the where-to-end-the-wallpaper dilemma. If you make it a walk-through galley, with the range and fridge on the same wall, the sink can go against the bathroom wall, which might make relocating plumbing easier. The hallway door moves over and the entry door-swing changes (or not, if that is less awkward). The laundry also switches sides--I'm wondering why it wasn't designed that way to start, since the noise and vibrations of the W/D would be against the bathroom instead of the bedroom--and plumbing would be shared. Counters on both runs can be made extra-deep, and if the budget allows, custom, extra-deep drawers would add to storage space. Prep space beside the sink is minimal, but items could be rinsed, then moved to the counter beside the range to finish. Second option gives you a side-loading pantry to the right of the fridge. Comments (1)In my opinion, individual room items do not exist on their own. For a unified and cohesive room one has to consider all the elements - floor, ceiling, walls, other furniture, room size, your style, etc. Other issues include budget, and number of people who use the space. First order of business is for you to pick your style. As it stands now, it appears to be casual.
