Comments (4)I WSed my Verbacum Polar Summer as an experiment this year. Mullein grows wild here and I have always admired it, so we'll see how my designer models compare with the originals. I saw a volunteer mullein at the top of my drive way last year, made sure it wouldn't be disturbed and it never got much bigger than a cabbage. Maybe even the wild mulleins need two years to grow a flower stalk....See MoreI may have gone overboard...
Comments (13)Hi fleegle96 that`s an impressive graphic, I like that kind of stuff. Just hope that your growing season is long enough for all the great Dahlias. I only have Zingaro from your list, but new for me too. what is your main aim with those Dahlias: cut flowers, great display in the garden... (I assume that someone producing a detailed graph as you is not content with just: plant and see what happens) -spacing: depends, taller cultivars about 3 feet apart, dinner plate varieties can get very big, so those even wider. Sounds like you have plenty of space. They grow healthier if they get more space and good air circulation. -arranging: personally I try to combine cultivars that go well together, like warm yellow and oranges, pale pink with purple, white and pastels. definitely a matter of personal taste, but a point worth considering. height: tall in the back row (northern side...) so they don`t cover/shade shorter varieties. lay out of beds: for low maintenance straight rows for easy hoe access, path ways to move between them. for a fancy display the lines could be wavy or something. Staking/ support how many do you have altogether? professional growers often use some kind of net to support whole areas. Looks very technical. Otherwise sturdy stakes/poles, IME one or two per plant. I had some plants break because I used too flimsy bamboo canes, which snapped or bent at some point. With dinner plates it is advisable to stake each single flower head, they can snap in a rain or gust of wind. plants get bushier if you cut off the tip when they are about knee high, over the third or fourth set of leaves, get more and smaller flowers. (so, perhaps just try it on some plants) guess what, I ordered from a certain island as well, after discovering that they ship to overseas as well. and their shipping fee is just twice of that from a local nursery (very attractiv milage-cost-ratio IMO...) and if you can spare the time do make notes. so later you can fine-tune or edit your collection, cull the dull or whatever-ones. Have a great Dahlia season, bye, Lin...See MoreOpinions please, Husband has gone overboard
Comments (39)Update: For the past 2 weeks I have been preparing yard and house for Son's Grad Party which took place this past weekend. It was well attended and overall went fairly smooth. My husband decided he couldn't wait anymore and talked to my son about things (without me being present). I was able to talk with son later, he says he "understands" and just wishes I didn't have to go. Have tried to give him opportunity to speak about his feelings My husband has laid on lots of guilt. Underneath it all have been the ugly conversations with my husband. Husband has now informed me that I can't take any of my furniture with me when I leave. "How would our son feel if he came home and (some of) the furniture is gone?" He tells me I can't take a large family painting (that my uncle painted) with me because he would have to paint the wall underneath and that wouldn't be fair. (I'm not joking) The lastest is the surprise vacation that husband reserved back in Feb. I told him all along not to include me in those plans. Now since my son doesn't know that I don't want to go, husband says and I quote "bite the bullet and go." My daughter is also going, so husband says it "still could be fun". However, I know that son and gf will have their own room- I just don't want to be part of that anymore. I feel sick. I confronted husband about the (nude)pictures of gf on the computer. He tells me that he would NEVER do such a thing. He was offended that I would think such horrible things about him. I have proof that he hacked the gf's Facebook account. He went so far as to change the email contact information on her profile, so that everytime she changed her password he was being informed by email. And I am the one who has not been loyal to him, and believes only the worst. Tells me that he has covered my donkey with our son(because I don't come home til 8pm most evenings)and defended me....See MoreExcited about verbascum
Comments (5)Well, the verbascum has been blooming for a long time now. It started out disappointing , looking like bits of popcorn stuck to the stalk. Finally the blooms opened and were more interesting looking. The plant sent out some side shoots, and overall leaned over a bit, which was prettier than just being stiffly upright. One of my verbascum plants has not ever progressed past the bits of popcorn stage. Maybe it gets less water. With the plant leaning over, many little side shoots are reaching upwards, which makes the stalk look something like a comb. Overall I'm not sure I'd plant it again as it is a fairly large plant and looks kind of weedy to me. Another two plants from seed I doubt I'll try again are ammi majus and convolvulus. Both are spindly. My Benary's Giant zinnias and cosmos are doing well. Gomphrena Fireworks is growing slowly. Have lots of Forget-Me-Nots. Every year I usually have lots of self-seeded rose campion and larkspur plants. Once had big drifts of larkspurs. Now both of these have dwindled away. Very few of either came up. Someone else in our town who usually has a big splash of rose campion barely has any this year. It was a mild winter. I wonder what happened....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
