If pine trees are evergreen, why do they drop so many needles?!?!
Comments (12)My experience is: 1-araucarias drop lower branches, not leaves, every 2-3 years 2- I am still waiting for my kauris to drop a leaf. They are going to be 3 years old in january 3- Juniperus chinensis - kaizuka - drops very few, small branches and only when shadowed, the same for my sequoiadendrum, cupressus sempervirens, spruces 4- All the pinus I have drop last year or older leaves after summer, 5-larch, metasequoia and bald cypress are not evergreens in this sense, they can, or can not, drop all leaves depending on the climate during winter....See MoreTroubleshooting My Sluggish, DisconnectingLaptop - So many issues
Comments (121)First I have to confess that I have not gotten to backing up the hard drive - or working on the start up programs. Other computer issues in the family took priority - and then we had non-technological family difficulties. So my focus has been elsewhere. The internet connection still sometimes drops. Less often but it happens. I can just buy a wireless dongle. The laptop had been running cooler after getting all the bogus programs off. But lately it's sluggish again and running hot. The hard drive is making a bad noise. Not sure how to describe it but kind of like a car struggling to turn over. It does it just occasionally - some times if it's just trying to perform some action - and just now when I started the laptop. (It has not made the sound since it started up). Since hard drives are mechanical, does this sound like the hard drive might be failing? if it's hardware failure, is there any point in running chkdsk? or any other test? If the hard drive is failing, could that be causing it to run hot and slow at times? seems logical to me but I have no idea. I could inexpensively replace the hard drive. And get a wireless dongle. I imagine all that could be done for under $100 and just a small amount of time. The other troubleshooting I did was partly to learn. Here's what I like about the computer and why I may want to save/keep it: great size - 13", light - but has a great, great keyboard for such a small laptop. like the trackball and no touchpad. includes a free upgrade to Vista (so it could be used after XP is not supported) What I don't like: ongoing wireless adapter problems, sometimes running hot, possible failing hard drive, no web cam. Not sure if I'll put it to sleep soon - or try to resuscitate it. If I decide to let it die a peaceful death, there's no need to back up the HD. If I decide to replace the hard drive (if it needs it) or keep it if the HD's fine, I will back it up and make that a priority. And of course, now that I'm writing this post, it's behaving absolutely fine. Quick, cool, no noise. Thanks. Lynn....See MoreWhy are quilts so dynamic while cross-stitch remains boring?
Comments (33)Cross-stitching and embroidery are a big part of folk culture in many East European countries. If you are looking for novel ideas and inspirations, check out Czech, Slovakian, Ukrainian, Russian or Baltic folk designs. I've got several books on Slovakian, Latvian, Lithuanian and Russian embroidery. I use them a lot in my hobby. Czechoslovakian folk designs: https://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/books/dmc_cse.pdf (free downloadable book) Russian and Ukrainian folk patterns: http://patternmakercharts.blogspot.com/2009/07/1877-collected-velikorusskih.html ( and many more pattern books on this website) Latvian designs: http://folkcostume.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html Below is a link to a free cross-stitch pattern website that has novelty designs, as well as a section on Ukrainian cross-stitch patterns A sample of Russian and Ukrainian folk designs: Here is a link that might be useful: Gvellostitch...See MoreFelix Leclerc in limited supply...
Comments (17)You're welcome Rebecca! We very cold zoners of course have their own special problems to deal with ... again, such as winter warm spells causing desiccation due to plants being unable to draw and replenish moisture from the frozen ground. That's why I always deeply water my climbing roses and all evergreens weeks before the winter chill sets in. I have posted the above photo several times, it was taken in 2016, there are two 'John Davis' specimens, the smaller one to the left had grown to the eves this past summer, though I did experience desiccation problems with the larger plant (due to heat build up next to the house) and had lost the two largest stem. This autumn, I had done a better job at tying and directing the stems away from the house. The biggest compliant about 'JD' is the fact that he often refuses to climb, again this is where fertilizer can really give the boost he requires. I don't use any special brand, just a ONE time spring application of high nitrogen lawn fertilizer 25-10-12, I'm not saying this is the ideal formulation, though has proved good for me. I only do the one shot because my growing season is short and 'JD' likes to continue to grow late into the season. This past October, he was showing off in near full bloom and I was concerned about hardening off prior to the soon onset of winter ... though because this rose is so hardy, he is capable of quickly shutting down....See MoreSheila z8a Rogue Valley OR
