Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

Need help with recessed lighting

My kitchen is 13x18. I will have cabinets along one wall (the 18 foot long wall). There will be different heights and depths of the cabinets. In the picture I have the 3 sections highlighted in orange. I will also have a kitchen island 3x8 with 2 pendant 16 inch pendant lights. I need help for the placement of the recessed lighting. I would like to put 6 of the 4 inch ultra thin recessed downlights. I am willing to put 8 if need be. Can someone tell me where they should be placed?

I am going to comment on a couple of things first , no to the different height and different depth cabinets and keep that simple the different height ones are already very dated and make no sense. As for lighting 3 pendants that are smaller are IMO a nicer look than 2 larger ones . The pot lights need to be placed to light your counter and you need to add under cabinet lighting too so that you have no shadows when you are working.Your KD should have all this info but maybe you should get a good lighting store to come and help . BTW your fridge should have been counter depth so that that whole wall of cabinets would then be the same depth.

I don't know what the rule is on this, but we put our 4" cans with the edge closest to the cabinet over the edge of the counter. That way, they shine right in front of you when you are standing at the counter. A 6" would get pushed back farther if you use the edge. Stand at a counter where you would work comfortably and look up. My thought is that you want the center of the light just in front of you and hitting the counter in front of the upper cabinets. To close and they wash the cabinet more than light your work space and too far back, the center of the light will hit your head rather than toe work area. Make sense?

I recommend Juno lighting. They will have solutions for each type of installation. For instance, the shower recessed can needs to be one that can be used in wet locations. Visit a reputable lighting showroom (not a big box store) and work with a salesperson.

That electrician was blowing smoke. Remodel cans don't cause the drywall to sag. It would be pointless to rip down the drywall to install "new contruction" cans. The only time to use those is in new construction or if you are removing the drywall for some other reason. Otherwise, it's just needless damage and work. Maybe he just doesn't like to be careful about damaging drywall or putting excessive holes in the walls/ceiling when running the wiring, so he uses this 'excuse' to justify his "bull in a china shop" technique.

Thanks! 2 cans plus a blank is a perfect solution. And I love the buffet can. I was going to put art lights above the paintings over the buffet. But a can is simpler, and lets me change up the art from time to time. One more question about the cans on the other end of the table. My first diagram was sloppy--living in a demo site and losing track of details. Here's an older diagram of the whole room, measured more accurately. The existing cans are 6" off from the table's center. I think the optimal thing would be to remove those lights and put in a new set of four cans at the table corners. But if my coowner objects, is it reasonably good enough to just leave those there and add the over-table and buffet light?

Obviously it depends on the actual wattage/lumens of the light but I would go with 8, I think more light in a kitchen is generally preferable. Spacing wise I would put 2 over the old and and the other 6 above the aisle about 3 feet apart.
