Canna pot size sounds good. When mine start a seed pod I trim it back to ~ 2" above the next leaf. Don't know if that's right, but mine continue to bloom most of the summer. They will bush out/spread in time. My dwarf canna (1 plant) got so root-bound it split it's 10" plastic pot the second year. You might try raising the sweet flag on a brick 'til it gets going, then sink it again. Yes, time and fertilizer if you haven't. Give that pickeral time, it's one of my best doers. Again you may try putting it just under the water 'til it gets going, then drop it. Mine hang out at about that 3" over the pot level and thrive. My pond only gets about 4 hours of sun/day. Don't know about the others :) But, if you're anything like me, you can't wait to have lots of lush plants...so you buy a few more...then just one more...then all of a sudden you have 3 ponds and 2 veggie filters just to hold plants and you're starting a local pond plant exchange!!!

You are not the first, it has been claimed to have happened by others (very rarely). Technically when we have vegetative reproduction we can expect the offspring to be clones of the parent and cannas unlike hydrangeas will not change color based on soil conditions to any noticeable degree. Discounting some radical sort of mutation (very remote) we can usually find a logical explanation; sometimes maybe not. Are we talking about digging only a few or dividing several dozen plants to transplant? Did you leave any in the original bed? Can we identify the cultivar (name-variety)? Did your cannas produce seed pods with viable seed that fell to the ground? Do you protect your canna bed from freezing? Do you remember seeing rogue plant/plants in the previous years? As you can see, there are many potential factors that MIGHT explain your situation. It would be very beneficial if we had some good before and after photos of the cannas. As unlikely as you may think, there is likely a simply explanation; we simply may not find it. Sorry, Kent

The plant has to expend energy to form seeds, so in theory at least, removing the pods as soon as they begin to develop would prompt the plant to put the energy no longer needed for making seeds into making more flowers. Once the pods are mature, it would make no difference at all whether they are removed or not because the plant is no longer providing any nourishment to them at that time. That's why the capsules turn brown. In either case, the rhizome keeps developing continuously as long as its environmental needs are met.
