What's involved in replacing porch columns?
Comments (2)Not a bad project as long as you have adequate help/equipment. I just finished replacing 14 columns on our wrap around. You will need jacks to lift the porch, etc. You may have to pre-order the columns to make sure that they are the right length. Make sure you use an aluminum plinth block at the bottom for ventilation as well as keeping the column from sitting right on the floor. Finally, and perhaps most important...be sure to prime the bottom of the column with two coats of OIL BASED primer. Following up with a coat of paint on the base won't hurt....See MoreDo I keep this column on my front porch?
Comments (16)IMO, that white column is too fancy-looking and monumental for the house. They look colonial and the main part of your house looks industrial? And maybe the column is too far to the edge of the porch? Actually, to me it looks tilted. That's metal siding? If so, I would look more industrial-y for the column and figure out how to blend the chimney in. Actually, I would re-think the entire porch and make it more current and less conventional. Right now, it doesn't look like it really goes with the architecture of the house. Could you take some more photos so we can see the whole house? Different angles? The yard?...See MoreFront porch columns: Laminated or site built wrapped?
Comments (8)I agree with mie0782. Experienced continual seam-splits with our builder installed columns. Unfortunately exact match replacements were unavailable in PermaCast but the millman recommended painting the hollow interior before installing new ones. I used highway striping paint using an old towel attached onto a piece of conduit as a paint brush. Original columns began showing signs of failure within a year, replacements are still like new after a decade....See MoreFront porch column & rail ideas (industrial style)
Comments (7)Suggest you stop and decide what the entire project will look like, then work to make it happen. Think through all your ideas. Figure out how everything will be done. Looking at the lights for an example. The base should be in the center of the piece of siding. Lap siding is normally installed with butt joints staggered, or the end butts a piece of trim. I'd remove the 2 leftmost lights, add some dark trim and a wide column. Consider removing the railing....See Moreklem1
