Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

Needing help with Exterior Color Choices

We are replacing a very old and dysfunctional (double) front door, with a new standard-sized single door with a single sidelight. It will be Craftsman style (minus the dentil shelf). They've asked me to pick colors and I did. I went with a medium wood stained door and a green trim to match my house trim as best as possible, but it's not really close. I realized this needed more thought and was a great opportunity to update the exterior of my house and I don't want to mess up! I'm thinking a new trim and accent color is in order for my home, but I'm lost as to what will go with the dusty rose pink brick! And maybe I should go with a different door color? I'm having a ridiculous time visualizing and I won't even go into how much time I've wasted on virtual design apps. All thoughts and opinions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks!!!

Is that the new door in your photo above? If not, then wait and take pix once it is in and we can help you finish up the look.

Please take more photos in broad daylight. Show the shutters and trim you want to paint.

That is a very, very green lawn, someone has a green thumb.

jejvtr: I like the first link you showed, but the second one did not work. You are right the columns look similar. Perhaps you should leave them afterall, they are growing on me. It has a certain delicacy with the arched roof and you may change you mind also once the trim is painted different than the house color. Which is probably another reason my vote is for a non-white base color--to accentuate your lovely trimwork. I'm glad you are looking at other homes similar to yours for inspiration. When we were remodeling last year, I always kept a digital camera in my car and I would snap pics of features/colors/etc of houses I liked--usually while picking up or dropping off my kids from school or sports practices. I would try to drive a bit in the residential areas. Then when we were finalizing paint, I had my paint swatches with me and I would go up to houses which I liked and compare paint swatches. Once you and your DH find an inspiration pic I think this is helpful to narrow down to an actual color. You will always see things we don't, like lighting and how it works from various angles. What does DH think? Still white/red?

There are the exterior window color choices we have to choose from. The one on the left is cashmere, bronze in middle and pebble grey on the right. Was leaning towards the pebble grey as blends in with the brick mortar. Was not sure if the cashmere was just a little off color, bronze kind of looks like the aluminum windows we are replacing. Would be going for double hung with no divided lights as both my husband and I like the uninterrupted view without divided lights. Other other possible exterior window color is black, but my husband kind of nixed that idea as did not like it.

My current home has clapboard-style vinyl siding. The neighbor has the Dutch lap. Over the years I have come to prefer the Dutch lap. I almost had mine replaced, and I would have done the foam reinforced Dutch lap. Straight vinyl clapboard has a tendency to wave. Especially over long expanses. In our neighborhood almost everyone got a new roof in 2008 after a bad hail storm. Those that chose black regret it. It is too stark. These are mostly traditional homes. Go with the charcoal instead.

Have you considered the new brick look with the Germen Schmer process ( Paint the brick a whitish color and wipe it off.) It'll lighten up the entry and front of the house; then you won't have to worry about what paint colors match the pink. Any color will do; the front exterior looks too dark; it needs some pop! Also, a single door (oak,etc) with glass cut outs, wound give you more space in the entry to add a 2nd (matching) light fixture (something of a sconce nature; the entry needs a little ("balancing").

I know you are not painting your brick but this house immediately stood out in my mind. The brick color is very similar to yours and the ivory painted trim on this house I find beautiful to enhancing the brick. I realize this is a traditional home but color is color. The front door and the french doors are a reddish wood but you could paint your front door in puce - a color that is coming back in fashion. It would look great on your front door. The current green scheme looks tired and is dated. It needs a happy light color to allow your home to shine and be the updated happy house you'd love!
