how much would it take to build this house now?
Comments (11)kimberlyinva, That seems very affordable. I threw this question out there to see what people think. I live in San Antonio, so building isn't too too expensive yet. I am constantly blown away by how much people are paying for houses and because I do love the basic box, two story layout with not a lot of rooms, but spacious rooms (and a front porch) I was wondering if sticking to this plan would be more affordable than other plans. If I were to have this built, I'd have a bathroom upstairs, one downstairs, good insulation, clapboard or hardi plank. We could do a lot of the finishing work ourselves, but I do like the pocket doors in the plan and the finish carpentry I envision for the moldings would cost us, I'm sure. I was hoping that the basic box would be cheaper to build.right now this is just a daydream. I appreciate any and all responses. I get so much info from this forum...I really love it....See MoreHow much does this house cost to build?
Comments (21)You could check Zillow, Redfin etc. (even Sotheby's) for your city to see what $1 million gets you for a fairly recent contemporary style house. This is a better, more accurate, and usual approach, though, and a very good education courtesy of our own Virgil Carter: Buying Land, Designing and Building A Custom Home, Part 1A Buying Land, Designing and Building A Custom Home, Part 1B Buying Land, Designing and Building A Custom Home, Part 2A [Buying Land, Designing and Building a Home, Part 2B[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/tips-for-buying-land-designing-and-building-a-custom-home-reposted-dsvw-vd~5213136?n=2) [Buying Land, Designing and Building A Custom Home, Part 3[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/buying-land-designing-and-building-a-custom-home-part-3-dsvw-vd~5213150) Also this is a helpful thread, https://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/3836931/what-are-you-doing-to-make-your-house-enrich-your-life?n=38 PS Virgil, did I get them all and in the right order?...See Moreflat roof but not a modern house
Comments (26)Resisting high winds is not a DIY design task nor will you find enough accurate information on the internet. You need a good structural engineer and architect. I've only dealt with high wind loads on ocean front properties but I can tell you that a low-sloped roof (l1/4" per foot) will have serious problems with uplift at the corners and excessive rain drainage in addition to higher maintenance and cost. I'm going to guess a good design team will end up with a 7 in 12 +/- hipped roof well anchored to walls that are well anchored to the foundation with roll down hurricane shutters. But don't rely on my opinion, hire some design professionals....See Morenew siding for irregular roof and flat front house
Comments (5)You are never going to make this house look traditional, it’s a seventies modernist form and always will be unless you want to spend a fortune... it’s usually easiest to make it the best version of itself which is why your neighbors scheme works- simple and effective. Since you don’t want all white I would do a medium grey on everything, introduce some natural wood elements maybe in the new entry. Don’t add shutters, window grids, columns, or anything colonial. Do add more landscaping in front....See Morecpartist
