Home Decorating Design Dilemma dining room

Help with art above buffet

Hi everyone! I’m looking for art to go above our buffet. The room is long and open the living room. I thought I wanted a landscape (Or horizontal) piece, but now I’m thinking a portrait (or vertical) piece might look better. What do y’all think? The buffet isn’t styled, and I would love any advice for that also! TIA!

You could do a vertical piece. I have attached a photo of buffet I did for one of my client's Dining Room. I added wall sconces, however, if you don't want to get into electrical you could add wall brackets with vases of plates on them, or candle sconces. It is your Dining area and candle light is a nice warm light for entertaining, or dinner just the two of you.

Too high, too small ; I agree with all of the above. Above the mantle is prime space/location, you shouldn't have to merchandise around the picture to make it look right. I disagree with adding more matting, possibly you should look for a print that can be framed with all of the image showing, this particular print looks like the matting is hiding some of the picture by cutting off parts of the trees, not too effective, imo. The colors do work in your room, the red is great.

I have no help to add about the art but I do love the colorful rug @celery showed I the last post. Something dramatic with that gorgeous green in it will tie the room together. Your dining table is stunning! And the green chairs are a happy surprise ( most dining rooms have all chairs the same).

Rearranging the book cases really is more visually pleasing, Celery!! I would remove the far right tiny book case and the far left white banner, for sure. I have to agree there is a lot going on and before your art will ever be seen you need to deal with the busy of that wall. Right now the wall cannot handle another thing for eyes to bounce from. I also think the new shape, circle Celery added is a better fit than your art. I think I would need something larger to balance over that TV anyway.

You want what you put above to have the total width of 3/4 of that buffet.

So either one art piece of 3/4 the width, or two things whose width pus the separation between the two add up to that.

You can use a fantastic starburst mirror, or a piece of art work.

You don't want to clutter up the buffet with several small things.

Skip the blue and white ware unless it is really quality.

Candlesticks, or flowers in a vase, or a flowering plant, or a tea set on a tray would all look great.
