Anyone else have the beginnings of hostas browning and shutting down?

I now see more than a few of my hostas getting brown leaf tips. I don't think it's heat, because last week we had a lot of rain, every day. Is this the Fall Shutdown already?

I was just thinking that today also. Very early for here but it has been hotter and dryer than usual in Minnesota this summer.

I am seeing some of this, but because of the sun moving to the southern sky, some of them are all of a sudden in more sun than before. But I still have hostas blooming if you can believe that. Zone5

Thank you for all the responses. It's interesting to read how deer behave, in different parts of the country. I don't know if it the deer themselves, or how much they have to eat...but there are definitely differences! So far, the lavender and other herbs/flowers have protected the roses pretty well, so I tried doing that in the vegetable garden, too. I planted marigolds, cosmos and zinnias around the broccoli, cauliflower and dill. The deer walked through the garden (I see them in early morning, walking on the paths LOL) but they never touched the dill and only ate the broccoli and cauliflower leaves, after the first frost killed off the flowers. Very interesting! So, where deer are hungry and numerous...this may not work, but I'm going to keep experimenting and see if I can hide more veggies next year. If only I could find something tall enough to hide corn, but I think I'll need a fence to grow that :)

HVAC: System overheating and shutting down.

Hey guys. I was having the same problem last week. My Trane heatpump condenser fan motor failed. I went out and got a Dayton motor from WW Granger. It was a 4 wire motor and my orig. GE motor was three wire. so I installed it by taping off the brown wire with white stripe and hooking up the other three. (This is a commonly used method of using a four wire in a thee wire pump.) Also replaced the split capacitor with a new one. After the fan ran for 15~20 minutes it would overheat and shut down. Like you I ran the water hose over the unit to let it drip and it would run forever... I checked all the voltages, etc. and voltage drop accross the contactor and everything was fine. The fan started fine but still overheated. FINALLY, I installed a seperate fan capacitor, 5 ufarrid @ 370v, on the advice of a tech support guy at Granger. VIOLLA! Dont ask me why but now the fan runs at about 35 deg.C in the air stream and stays there. If anyone has a theory about why this worked please let me know. If you want a wiring diagram on how this worked email me @kidshows@gmail.com and Ill scan it into a pdf for you. You have to make a jumper wire. (I used the wire off my old GE motor and just added another spade connector to match the capacitor). Hope this helps you out. Moldy Fisher-Paykel washer-anyone else have this problem?

9+ years on F&P Intuitive (same basic design as yours...just more options) and not a whiff of anything nasty or moldy to be found. I do NOT run exclusively cold, which I have always found to be a bad idea. Also, I do occasionally use LFS (depends on the items being washed). However, I wash colds on cold, items recommended for warm on warm, whites and cleaning rags on hot, etc. I also run the recommended cleaning cycle 4 times per year (every season), with one of them (once per year) being exclusively hot water and lots of vinegar (i.e. no detergent). This not only cleans, sanitizes and deodorizes, but also removes every last speck of detergent reside too. The tub looks like new afterwards! The washer has been great and cleans very well, but every machine requires maintenance of some kind. If you never take care of it you will pay the price afterwards (if it were topic-appropriate, I'd tell the story of someone I know who never bothered to do any maintenance of any kind on their car...big mistake!).

9-7-2023: Just for fun, on a beautiful cool morning, I took some pictures (uncaged) of the two trees, A. psuedoseiboldianum. They both look to be quite healthy considering the abnormally long hot season we've had here. Yesterday we received 4/10" nice steady rain, and right after I had watered some. This morning it was down to 39df. That's 60d colder than a few days ago when temps hit 99-100 as it has many times this season. (There were frost warnings in the far northern parts of the state). #1 tree: The two good things I can say about this tree, is it's not a seedling anymore at 3-1/2' tall with increased trunk girth, and it isn't a 'stick' or whip anymore with at least 6 new horizontal branches from this season. Just not real showy yet except for the promise of good colors. #2 tree: Has put out new growth in numerous directions with even more girth increase than #1 tree. Both are still a little shy of getting full, all-day sun but I've had worse experiences with plants and hopefully this will improve with more root development as time goes on. ;-) I didn't water either one near as much as I did last year, when I kept them pretty moist almost all the time. This season they went several times, in the hot sunny weather, without watering, for up to 7 days at a time, and the soil was getting fairly dry by the time they got watered again. Along the lines of 'Water deeply but infrequently' so this should've given them more opportunity for roots to develop than the season before. ;-)

hard to give suggestions.. without a pic ...

i recall you made your own drip hose ..... im wondering if its not providing the water.. you think it was???

there is something called summer dormancy due to heavy drought ... but they reflush once out of the drought ... imo ... it might not be great to reflush .. using stored energy.. in early fall ...

if it is some form of drought.. make sure they are well watered.. deep into fall .. nothing is worse.. than a plant going thru winter.. already water starved ... obviously you dont need a lot of water in fall.. with cool days .. and cold nights ... but some time in nov.. just check to make sure the soil is not bone dry ... thru the root zone ...

Yep. Sometimes it happen almost overnight and you notice that fall is here. Plants get tired just like people.

Very hot dry summer here and water was in short supply.

The weather has now returned to the default setting for Wales - cool and wet.

I have lots of burnt plants, some of which are as Ken described, putting up new growth due to summer dormancy.

Others still look great.

September is apparently going to be warm and unfortunately dry.

So shutting down, not so much.

Suffering, I think so!

Next season will show the result.
