Reine Victoria on Espalier/Trellis in Bay Area?
Comments (6)imo, this is the only way to grow RV and its lovely sport, Mme Pierre Oger. It is an obligingly upright and slender rose although it does have a bit of twigginess: it retains its flexible growth throughout its life. These canes are easily bent and trained, ideally on a freestanding rail and wire or post and rail fence (it does appreciate good ventilation) and also appreciated a little dappled shade - the petals are very fine, almost translucent and does not do very well in rain. However, if you are completely against spraying, I would not put this rose in a really prime spot because it will, at some point, defoliate with BS (it occurs early in the season for me, although it quickly recovers new growth so I would not be totally put off by a temporary condition)....See MoreSF Bay Area, clay soil tree recommendation?
Comments (6)Thanks for the suggestions! blakrab: Diciduous is ok. I'm surrounded by evergreens, so it's nice to have some diversity. not sure if we have any other open space to plant more though (property is overrun by coast live oak which sprout like weeds here. Every year I pull out about 20-30 saplings, and seems like I'm making no dent in the growth density here... every few years I have to have one cut down since they start crowding eachother too much). I'll take a close look at the Texas persimmon. Is that anything like the persimmons you find sold in stores? (orange fruit)? There are few of those in the area. if so, may be there'll be enough in the area without having to plant another in our lot... hoobv: it's a pretty densely vegetated hillside property, so fire is always a concern. But never really thought bout tree-fire exposure (we're usually more concerned with shrub/grass fire). I said 15ft, but just looked at the survey map, and it seems like it's actually more like 25 ft from the house. making a terrace is an interesting idea. the tree can be taller, as long as it's the type that is conducive to shaping/height reduction management. but taller tree usually means faster growth (may be) and hard to manage? and thank you for the tree selection guide. I'll ahve to take a look at that. An arborist who just came by recommended chinese pistachio. He said around here, it doesn't get much bigger than about 25ft or so, and has great fall foliage, drought tolerant.. doesnt require too much water in the summer so won't hurt the juniper either (I called it juniper, but arborist said cypress, so... hmm). The tree sounded good until I found out that it has a potential of growing to 60ft.. i'll have to do more research on that tree....See MoreBay Area has 7th straight below average month for temperatures.
Comments (9)While my tomatoes are suffering, my pole beans, cucumbers and zucchini are producing like crazy. I figured when life gives us lemons, we make lemonade, so I'm pulling up the disastrous sweet peppers and starting peas and broccoli. (Will probably induce a giant heat wave, heh). I have to admit, I'm enjoying the savings on water as well. I'm only watering my veggies about once a week here in Sonoma County. And since my hobby is concrete garden art, these temps are just right....See MoreA bay area Mango tree..in four years.
Comments (0)3227 Bruce Drive in Fremont. I saw a photo of it last summer..you can walk under it as it has a patio tree size. If you look on google's 2011 street view its an unbranched 5' or so plant. Great growth for 4 years time. Its not protected by any structure. So,believe in Urban Warming if not global. Also on that same street,ILLwarra King palms and Ficus benjamina. All fronting different homes. Take a drive out there......See MoreJason (Zone 10b, San Diego)
