Kitchen layout - enough walk space?
Comments (16)Brianadarnell, what a beautiful kitchen. I would have never guessed your floors are oak, I particularly like them. Well, I'm definitely going to narrow the distance between the range and the island. If I go 42" there, I get about 54" on the other side. The other things, I'm not sure I can change. If we put the refrigerator next to the wall ovens, we won't have a place to put anything we just take out of the oven, or a place to set a glass or something we take out of the fridge. I see that 27" isn't a lot of space near the range, but my intent was for most of our prep to be on the island itself. Also, I now realize, I hadn't thought much about it because I've never had a kitchen with much space around the stove! Funny how our past experiences shape how we look at things. Anyway, I may try to bring the island as close to the refrigerator as possible, so as to make the island prep space closer to the range. And I guess I'll end up using the corner space as well. I think we're pretty close on this. Thank you so much everyone!...See MorePros and Cons of Removing 1 Garage Space with Walk-in Closet
Comments (22)Agree with above posters - look more toward what is the norm in your specific location . Where I live, a very urban residential area, not only do some of us not have garages but we dont have a driveway or offstreet parking of any kind. Yeah, that means our properties are valued less, but that can be a good thing - means I can afford to live in a neighborhood I couldnt otherwise afford - and then when its time to sell, Ill pass the savings on to the next person - and I expect there should be a lot of interest because of its affordability. Anyway - someone local could give you a better sense of it. Around here, offstreet parking is highly desireable but a garage is not a must. In fact I can think of one nearby residence where the humongous garage has been a liability (placed in their front yard bc there was no other location for it)....See MoreNeed help finding space for another bedroom
Comments (12)Whoa, what the heck is going on with that exterior. So, if I'm interpreting this look correctly, this is what I'm supposed to see: Someone built an old stone house (but not really, because it's fake and probably has vinyl on the side). They then later built an addition onto the left of the (fake) old stone house, but somehow weren't able to match the roof and window line of the original (btw, even the 'old' widows are off-kilter and you will never un-see that now that I've pointed it out). Then, even later, they decided to add a garage over there. But that wasn't enough space, so they threw a lean-to structure onto it. I can't really tell when the front and side porches were added on, but they clearly aren't part of the original (fake) old stone house. It's like Punky Brewster grew up and decided to become an architect. I don't know what's going on these days, but I see this strange, mismatched sock aesthetic popping up all over the place in new construction. The other day I counted 5 treatments on a front exterior elevation: horizontal siding, vertical siding, faux cedar shingle siding, brick, and that awful rock veneer stuff. All on a single side of a house. I guess this is just the natural evolution of that aesthetic playing out. The interior is quite pretty in the photos, but that's a face only a mother could love. (Edit to include: I am not an architect and the opinions of a random internet stranger don't really matter. But when I do upload my concepts in a 6 months or so, I hope they are roundly teared down in a brutally honest discourse if they are lacking)...See MoreWalk in closet in octagonal shaped space with 3 windows?
Comments (5)I do not see a correlation on the size of your family or the kid's ages influencing a walk-in closet in the Master Bedroom. If your house is a true original Victorian, then you are certainly aware of, and resigned to living with, a lack of closets from that era. Making a Master ensuite is a necessary purpose, however, I cannot imagine that capturing the turret space in any Victorian would be an appropriate solution for a good ensuite layout, closet functionality, or ROI. Reserved on seeing entire plans of the floor(s), but I would lean towards your alternative solution....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
