Help me decide what color should we paint our front door..
We bought our home a few months ago and now that renovations are slowly coming to an end, we are working on the finishing touches. Our home is painted "Revere Pewter" by SW and the trim is "Alabaster" by SW. The door is currently "Wythe Blue" from SW. I'm not a fan of the blue door, or blue in general for a door. My thoughts so far are just painting it Alabaster
or maybe some tone of light green/sage? (Definitely not dark green). I'm just not sure how that would look though. We don't want anything too bold. We're fans of very calm and neutral tones. The front of our home faces North and the back of our home faces South.
Any thoughts/ideas on my color choices or some other options are welcome!

Comments (10)Yes, I agree with barb 5 that the door surround is a later addition that takes away from the fabulous brick detail on your elevation. Possibly the dormer was added at the same time as the door trim? I think you could stain or paint the dormer to blend more with the house and consider using the same colors on the existing door trim to keep all that white from jumping out from the fine restrained lines of the original house. But IMHO I would remove that door trim and bet you'll find something fabulous that a previous owner scorned as not sufficiently grand. Do something to blend the dormer with what you find after taking off the door trim. Do you have a local art or design school? This might make a good project to take to them that they would love their students to have to see what they will be doing in the real world....See MoreColor experts, please help--what color should we paint our house?
Comments (18)Thank you! So much great feedback. Sadly, the paint job is a necessity rather than just aesthetics -- paint on the back side is failing pretty badly & peeling off in layers. (After reading up on the paint forum, I think it was just too many layers of latex on top of old oil paint without adequate prep.) Maybe we will keep it close to current color. I'm not sure what color it is, but I'll have to stop by the BM store and pick up a tab for Briarwood. I think those color visualizers are just a bit off, at least on our monitor -- Down Pour is a very smurf-y blue on my screen. Luckily, SW store is right down the street. Of the SW colors, we liked Mineral Deposit -- gray, but not quite so dark. Johnmari, my wife said exactly that about warm trim looking bad with cool gray field color. I just want to get away from the current ultrawhite, just tone down a bit but not too much. Shutters? I think we will someday, after we've finished the essentials. Of course, being picky, I don't want to just screw aluminum shutters that don't match window size on there, so might be a while given that real shutters & hardware are pricey. The suggestion about doing the sash black is good--that could look really sharp and make the windows pop a bit more until we can dress it up a bit more with shutters. Absolutely agreed on the landscaping solutions. Could be more varied and it would add a lot. Comments (5)Denita the front door isn't really visible from the front of the house and I'd rather not post the whole thing. but I think this would look really nice w/your house colors. beautiful shade, different and works w/your landscaping.
there are all sorts of pink shades. you don't want a little girl pink. more of a mauve/rose/blush pink. With pink and white flowers, I think this is a perfect shade.

What does it look like when the flowers are in bloom right in front of the house?
Do you have any plans to change up the landscaping?
That may affect what you might want to paint the door.
for example, if you don't get a lot of light, you can plant a lot of coleus,
or caladium
and astilbe
and have some hanging baskets of fuschia

benjesbride, Oh thank you so much! I didn't even think about checking the coordinating colors for revere pewter! Ideally I'd have the house all white with a fun pop of color for the door but my husband would just about blow a gasket if I added another expense to our renovation lol.
chloebud I'm actually loving both of those colors! I lean slightly towards the lighter color but I'm not walking away from the darker one either. I'll be getting some samples of those to try out. Thanks!
Cheryl Smith Good point & good idea. As I mentioned to benjesbride, I so wish it was in the budget to have our home repainted white so we could do a sage green door or some other variation of green. Green is my favorite color and unfortunately the sage/mint colors that I love, just don't seem to go with revere pewter.(We just purchased the home already painted the RP color)
loobab, Thank you for your suggestions! We are definitely changing up the landscape. We already took the rose bushes out and we plan to do some kind of hedge in that area instead. We typically like to landscape with evergreen plants and white flowers. I love green but I haven't found a shade that's not too dark nor too light that looks good with our Revere Pewter exterior. :/

This one has an exterior closer to the color our home is painted now but I don't think it looks amazing. I think it would look better if it were a white home or something lighter.
