Patriotism and the US military

To truly honor and respect American men and women in uniform, I believe we need to be MUCH more prudent and restrictive about where we send them and what we try to accomplish with armed force. Few if any of military actions taken by the US after World War 2 have been either necessary or effective and tens of thousands of young people in the military, many unwillingly there because of the draft, lost their lives. Arguably, needlessly.

Patriotism is the Kool-Aid often given to the public and US military members to justify the personal risks, circumstances and sacrifices they are ordered to deal with. We need to stop thinking the US is the world's police force because we accomplish little by doing so other than the deaths of service members and crippling the federal budget by wasting billions of dollars on "defense". Let's all think about being real patriots by doing everything possible to protect the lives of all Americans, military and civilians alike.

Yes, I served in the military and I saw it from the inside.
