Lawn infected with fungus?

I removed a dead lawn last September in my back yard in southern Utah. It had been destroyed by grubs.

I replaced it with sod after treating for grubs. I was so happy with my beautiful new lawn that established quickly.

In early August I started seeing brown patches. My landscaper said it was fungus due to high temperatures and high humidity. He treated with a fungicide, but it has continued to spread, leaving only a few patches of barely green grass.

Can anyone help identify whether this is a fungus and what to do about it? The grass that had turned brown had no roots and smelled like compost.

Thanks in advance for any assistance in diagnosing my problem and suggesting remedies!
