Best range vent hood in a custom cabinet surround?
Comments (4)Based on our 600 cfm VAH hood at our lake house, I'd say it's not a bad unit, but no one would call it quiet. We do a fair amount of "smoky" cooking and run it on high quite frequently. On high, with both blowers going, you have to raise your voice to converse near the hood. On "medium" (one fan running on the high setting) it's still a somewhat annoying (to me) background sound, on "low" it's pretty reasonable. I think if quiet is really the issue, then there is no question that an external roof or wall mounted blower, coupled with a Fantech silencer mounted in the attic, is clearly the best. That's what we're doing for our ongoing kitchen redo in the main house. Next best would be an remote blower mounted in the attic, again ideally with the Fantech silencer. Worst is any in-hood blower. But...edlakin is right, most of the time you run a blower on low settings so this is not a big deal unless you're really obsessive....See MoreRange Hood Help - in-line fantech but which hood?
Comments (21)In principle, any hood with an internal blower could be gutted of the blower and operated with an in-line or roof mounted blower. (GreenDesigns may have meant that using it while leaving the blower inside would be a poor plan.) I can imagine construction details that might cause non-optimal internal hood flow patterns, but I have no detailed knowledge of the internal construction of myriad hoods to know whether such are prevalent. There may be nanny jurisdictions that would claim that code approval of the hood was violated when it had its blower removed. Any hood available for order without a blower likely is fully compatible with an external blower. This, of course, can be confirmed with the manufacturer. The most important adaptation requirement is that the blower be continuously controllable, and that the hood control be a continuous motor control. A hood with just a few motor speed positions on a switch might require a compatibly-wired motor. While a multi-position hood control could in principle be replaced by a continuous control, par. 2 may apply. When I was doing my kitchen reno, I chose a compatible hood/roof blower combination (supplied by Wolf) because the entire scope of the project (gutting and reconstructing part of a house) made playing with the details of the blower circuit a side project of tertiary importance that I couldn't afford the time to deal with. As it happens, inside my Wolf (Independent) hood is a diac/triac motor control circuit, about the simplest design available that goes back to the '70s. The compatible Wolf (Broan) roof blower uses a typical induction motor that is easily controlled by this type of circuit. The cost versus time value trade-off needs to be considered when dealing with issues like this. kas...See MoreMixing wood and white cabinets: which of these two options is best?
Comments (11)emcee: I agree - at times I don't mind the half/half look and at other times it looks too divided to me. My husband would love the mix you're suggesting! He wants as much white as possible in the kitchen. But I want more unpainted wood in the kitchen so that wouldn't be enough. I did consider doing it the other way around, making the hutch white and the tall cabinets on either side wood. But our fridge is white and we're keeping it for several more years. So it looks better to have it the other way round. Hmm... I'm still mulling things over......See MoreAnyone using optional ambient lighting under Best range hood?
Comments (0)I am choosing a Best hood PK22 insert/blower in a 42 inch cabinet hood over 36 inch Miele dual fuel range. Flanking upper cabinetry will have under counter lighting controlled on wall switch. 2 Halogen lights come with the hood insert. Has anyone added the optional Ambient Light Panel? It is designed to work with under cabinet light controls but I haven't seen it installed anywhere. Is this overkill or a good idea? I feel like every little bell and whistle in this renovation is "just" $300 more so looking where to draw the line....See Moreprivategrdnr
