Another raccoon encounter...................
Comments (14)Hi Catherine: No bird feeders in my yard (except hummingbirds). I learned a long time ago that with bird feeders you end up with sunflowers, thistles, etc. growing wherever the birds drop them. By mouth or the other end. Only thing I can figure is I feed my cats dry food in the sunroom. Maybe it smelled it though the screen. Sandy: My first co-op job in high school was a typist at St. Stephens School. Being my first job my mom made me wear a white blouse, black skirt and nylons. Sister Mary Rita Mae the science teacher had a pet raccoon that she would let run around the room for exercise. While I was typing notes for her she let Bandit out of his cage. He ran across the room and bit me on my knee. It broke the skin and ruined my nylons. When I got home and told my mom she was more upset over my ruined nylons (they were expensive back then) than she was the bite. To this day I am terrified of raccoons and they seem to sense it. Before I leave for work I put all my work stuff on the side step, feed the fish, pull the car out, load it up and I'm on my way. One time last year after feeding the fish I reached down to close the garage door and saw something come running at me from around the side of the garage. It was a huge raccoon. I jumped into the car, slammed the door shut and pulled down the drive. The darn raccoon chased my car all the way down the drive. Whenever I tried to get out of the car it would try to get in. Of course my cell phone was in my purse on the side step. I was trapped in my car for about 1/2 hour till the raccoon got tired of this game and left. I was late for work and so shook up I almost blew chunks on drive to work. Now in the summertime I carry shake cans with me in the morning to throw at any raccoons that may be in the yard. I just seems like I am a magnet to sick raccoons. Maybe I have a certain aura about me. I like to bicycle down in the valley. Two weeks ago after descending the hill of the entrance to the park I was waiting to cross the road. Everyone on the all purpose trail had stopped what they were doing and were pointing behind me. I turned around only to see a raccoon charging me. I hopped on my bike and rode away. The next day after I finished my hour ride I decided to sit on a picnic table by the river and watch the Canada geese swim. I saw the grass move on the bank and thought it was a fisherman. Here comes a raccoon running straight at me. I had a towel around my neck and grabbed it and flicked it at the raccoon. All my other stuff was on the picnic table next to me (cell phone, water bottle, fanny pack). Didn't that darn raccoon stand up on it's hind legs and hiss at me. It grabbed the towel. It wouldn't back down. I slid all my stuff into the fanny pack, got on my bike and took off. It may have been the same raccoon. When I got to the parking lot there was an elderly couple. The gentleman told me something was wrong with that raccoon because they are noctural and shouldn't be out in broad daylight. Of course my family makes fun of me cuz the raccoons never bother me when anyone else is around. They think it's a "figment of my imagination." I guess it's the price I must pay for being a ponder and living down the street from the Metroparks. The pond is a big attraction for them. Jenny...See MoreOur trip across the pond
Comments (23)Rosewitch, England was definitely one of my favorite places I have ever visited. My folks took me there when I was 14, and I remember bits and pieces the Crown jewels, walking amongst the Stonehenge stones (roped off now, vandalism), Stratford upon Avon. Time for me to take my own 14YO. Im trying to think how I can get over there for a whole summer, LOL. Dlynn, I could have worked so much more. I didnt really look at night time stuff and there was loads to do. Greece: cant help you, but shoot Yasou a line, she went a few years ago. LOL Annie! Teresa, well go together. I wanted to explore more cooking and food shops/stores but didnt get to. Terri, here is more a link to Pictures of England, a website pointed out to me by Denise. I started it on Bourton on the Water, where we stayed for a few days. Thanks Sharon, I was actually thinking how can I even come close to posting her quality of travel guides, I dont do the pictures she does LOL. We might have sat at the same table in the Cheshire Cheeses dining room! Sawdust still there, but we didnt make it to the cellar. I missed a lot of the British Museum. It has changed.check out the new atrium. I couldnt keep up with DH and DS16. Afternoons, when I planned museums, I crashed. Next time! Pam, lots of people did more than we did per day! Theater every night, more attractions, I cant imagine. Gina heh heh yeah I need another vacation like a hole in my head. Speaking of whichDH has another week off in August. Nooooooooo! Comments (25)I think I must have stepped on him, and he was just saying to me "hey fatso, your hurting me, will you kindly get the heck off?" Unfortunately the only language he speaks, that I would understand, is biting. A week or so ago I was taking pictures at a horse show my wife was riding in, from the far side of the ring, when I suddenly heard screams of panic, and saw people fleeing the tent on the other side of the ring. I heard somebody say it was a snake causing all the fuss, and I thought to myself, I'm sure its a harmless, beneficial snake, and some bozo is going to He-Man-Up and kill the poor thing. However at the next break in the show I went over to the tent and found that one of the ladies had picked it up and was holding it to show to some of the kids at the show. After a while she handed it to another lady who carried the snake over to this unused, out-of-the-way jump, which it briefly explored and then nestled down underneath waiting for the hub-bub to end....See MoreOT: Ideas for calming down after bear encounter?
Comments (8)Vacationers don't care about trash or bear safety. If they don't, they should. We vacationed in a national park not long ago, in an area where there are lots of bears, and warnings were clearly stated and posted in every single room of our rental home. I kid you not! I guess the owners wanted to avoid a potential lawsuit in case a careless vacationer was attacked. Our trash cans were in an enclosure built of 2x4's which was locked, and it was very stout. We carefully followed instructions not to leave any trash outside a trash can. One night we heard a huffing noise outside the window near the trash cans, and a mama bear was there with a cub who looked to be about half-grown. She had torn through those 2x4's <gasp!> and her claws were stuck into a Coke box. We didn't know where that came from; it could have blown into our area from a neighboring home, as there were strong winds that night. The mama was upset because her claws were stuck, she couldn't get them out, and she was standing upright roaring, trying to get the box off. Some small children with us were very scared and crying, and their parents took them to another room to comfort them. The rest of us were very glad that a wall was between us and the bears! The next morning, there was no sign of bears, but our trash cans were a huge mess. The locks on them were gone (!) and of course every scrap of food was, too. I had no idea they could do that. <shudder> Sea Sea, I'm glad you're safe. I've always heard that one should punch an attacking bear in the nose, but I hope never to find out, and I am really glad the one you faced went away peacefully. If I were you, I'd probably have taken a hot bubble bath and had a mug of hot chocolate while soaking. :-)...See More- 7 years ago
